Trevor is right. They are safe - I ate these as a kid because my mother (of Armenian extraction) and my father, (Polish) used to pick them from under pine trees growing on a dairy farm over our back fence in Claremont, Tas. They re-assured my sister and me that they grow in Europe too. We ate them pickled, but I was no great fan of them, as I recall.
