Gum 23

[Paul Haese]

This image is of Gum 23. It is an emission nebula located in the constellation of Vela. A small part of the SNR is located on the lower left hand side of the image.

I think it is a most interesting looking area with lots of dust, what looks like a Herbig-Haro object to the right of the main nebula, the differing types of gas and the luminance within the field.

The image contains 47.5 hours of data with the bulk of it coming from the narrow band data.

looking good Paul, super interesting area, I am guessing it is fairly faint, almost screaming for a 2x mosaic, looks like some interesting stuff to the left of frame.

Superb work, Paul. New to me too. I like the strong contrast and highish colour saturation. An endless supply of very fine detail and structure to explore.

Can't spot the possible HH yet. There's something interesting at (1760, 613) out of (2500, 1872).

Fantastic images Paul, very smooth result and great colour in the central nebulous region. Looks like a nice job for your larger RC to get a high resolution/contrast image of the region

Quick question. On the left hand side of the image around the middle area there is to blue in the background. I was just wondering whether that is real or a LARGE lens flare(s) from the star that is teetering on being in frame?

Curious as to whether it is a deep blue filament or just a bright star

Russell yes a 2x2 mosaic would be nice. I have another on the go at present but need clear nights over the new moon to get some where. This one would certainly be worth a try too. Not enough hours each year though, even with the 600 plus imaging hours I did last year on this particular system. I just never find time to get enough data to do mosaics. Great suggestion though.

Thanks MnT for the comments and interest. I think the HH is just up and to the right (about the same size upper right clump of nebulosity away) of the upper right clump of nebulosity. I could be wrong but there seems to be lots of these around in Vela. If someone knows for sure I would be interested.

Thanks Colin, I agree this would be a region for the RC. Camera is now on its way back to me so it might manage to get done this season.

There is quite a bit of blue through out the left hand side which I take to be OIII in the field. That particular spot near the left margin in the middle is a blue star just out of field. Probably a similar brightness to the one in the centre of the image which has a halo around it. So I think you seeing the halo from the RGB set.

There is so much going on with this image Paul it is hard to take it all in. My eye is drawn to the narrow threads of red at the bottom left edge of the image. Not quite sure how your colour palette maps so I am wondering what these could be.

Thanks Rodney. Those narrow threads are part of the Vela SNR. I have in the last couple of months been imaging around the SNR. It's an incredibly interesting part of the sky with many interesting areas in the field. So far I have imaged Gum 15, Gum 17 and now Gum 23. The SNR itself is a vast complex worthy of imaging multiple sections. I think the combination of palettes works well in this instance.

Not many images of Gum 23 floating around. This is the first i have seen with narrowband Its great to see something a little different .
Surprised to see some nice Blues in the central gassy area makes it far more interesting than the usual sea of red that an RGB would produce.
