Calling fishermen from Rocky/Gladstone area

I'm headed off for a bit of a drag 'round the place in late April and hoped to spend some time around Rocky and Gladstone trying to catch a few fish and maybe some muddies. Are any IIS members up there able to point me towards some good fishing spots (dragging a tinnie with me) for some barra, Jacks, bluenose salmon, threadfin, muddies? All guidance gratefully received.

Hi Peter, This is just a bit further north from Rocky but is supposed to be a good spot. And has some dark skys as well. My boss (a keen angler) is going there after easter.

Thanks Rick. That looks worth a shot. Is there any fishing/crabbing around Mackay? Bucasia maybe?

Auckland creek behind the dog park in Gladstone is good for all sorts of fish, mud crabs and prawns best time for a fish is both sides of high tide as the water does disappear fairly fast leaving a bit of a walk through waist deep mud, also the sand flies can get a little wild there so take some insect repellant. The marina around the trawlers is good for some nice cod, sweetlip, coral trout and the usual bream etc with the chance of the occasional barra, pleanty of other spots around that are a little difficult to explain. I have heared Port Alma between Gladdy and Rocky is good for barra too but dont recall ever going. Go into complete angler at the Gladstone marina and ask whats on the bite and where, they are usually good for a bit of advice. Enjoy your trip

Oh hot water outlet behind the power station in the slower moving water hides some nice barra and queenies take lots of lures and expect to lose some though

Bucasia has a caravan park and boat ramp, but is close to suburbia so the local creek (Eimeo creek) is not much chop. Most locals here would head north in their tinnies past shoal point to some of the creeks there. Constant creek is a bit further north again but is the most popular fishing/crabbing spot north side of Mackay. To the south of Mackay Alligator creek is the place to go.

This info may be out of date, but when I was a kid in Gladstone in the 70's, my dad used to often take us out on the boat and anchor off Mud Island, or the narrows off Curtis island for very successful fishing.
We regularly caught parrot fish, red emperor, bream and coral trout with hand lines. Great fun and spoilt me rotten for fishing from then on

G'day Andy, and thanks. I just had a look at the area around Curtis Island on Google Earth. It is heavily industrialised - looks like a moonscape around the southern end. No wonder the locals were up in arms about damage to local fish stocks recently. Still, looks promising further up the Narrows towards the north.
