Gemini 8m IC5148 with wider field and halo

Hi to all

The Gemini GMOS field is rather ugly because there are 3 CCDs with gaps between them. This doesn't bother the professionals but it makes it more difficult to get a pretty picture so my first posting of this image cropped the gaps out. Since then I've been trying to edit out the gaps as much as possible and have succeeded to some degree so this posting is much closer to the full field. Another thing I didn't notice initially is that this exposure seems to have faintly recorded the halo around this planetary. This isn't bad for only a one hour total exposure but it is a big scope.

I've also included in the caption a link to the documentation on GMOS

Cheers

Steve

How good is it when it is possible to grab data from instruments of this calibre and process them! This one makes for a wonderfully detailed PN with lots of structure. My eye was drawn to what appears to be a chain of galaxies zooming out of the object at about the 2 O'clock position. Could be the makings of a galactic highway. Good one Steve.

The detail in this nebula is amazing considering how minuscule it is! So many other small PN out there that I would love to see imaged with this beast

Actually it's not that small as planetaries go. The Hubble Legacy Archive has lots of smaller planetary nebula image files too that you can grab and process yourself.

Thanks Rodney - yes they look like galaxies to me.

Super cool Steve. Some background galaxies that you don't see often.

Yeah, not bad, but you can't expect too much with such limited equipment.

Wow! That is beautiful. I think you chose your target very well and did it justice with your short but very productive time on this scope.

Thanks Lucas. It's always been one of my favourite planetaries.

It would be interesting to see what an 18 hour exposure looked like
