Attention SE-Qlders - Xmas is almost upon us

Well it's getting to that time of year again when all the xmas parties start to get into full swing again. It would be nice if we could get together for a bit of a astronomer's picnic at some time between now and Xmas.

Argonavis has suggested Bribie Is as a good central area. Also there is a good dark night the week before Xmas to get together at Astroron's (not neccessarily a Xmas party, just a final get together). So the nature of this pole is to;

1. work out how many would like to get together at Bribie
2. work out how many might come to Astroron's (whether the Bribie thing goes ahead or not)

I'm thinking very low key, byo everything. The only problem with Bribie is apparently they don't have any BBQs, so any other suggestion as to a venue that may have BBQs and is central would be good.

In your reply please put in a range of dates you would be able to make Bribie/other.

Hi Paul

Generally Xmas is quite a busy period so I've put myself down for Ron's only, to give me a chance of being there. In terms of dates, we're never sure until the time comes, as to what our firm commitments will be, so have left this open.

Thanks for orchestrating this.

Cheers

Dennis

Hi Rob,

Drive North from the Brisbane CBD along the Bruce Highway for say, 40kms, then the Bribie turn off is to the right. Drive East for say, another 15 to 20 mins.

So, I reckon around 60km from Brisbane and approx 1 hour.

Cheers

Dennis

I was thinking more along the lines of just an xmas get together Rob, rather than a viewing night.

How about a BBQ/picnic lunch at Little Yabba Creek followed by a night of viewing at Rons.
If we get there around 11am it will give us time to eat, have a swim then relax/nap before setting up for the night.

There will be viewing night opportunities at Ron's on maybe 16/17 (Moon rises at 1.18am) and 22/23 December, although the latter date may be rather close to a frentic Christmas for some. (as an aside, why does everyone beat themselves up for Christmas? I can't see the enjoyment in that. I think Christmas should be abolished.)

The Bribie event would be more of a social get-together. The poll should gauge interest.

BTW where is Yabba Creek?

Bill, Little Yabba is about 5 minutes down the road from Ron's.

I'm good either weekend.

Is Little Yabba Creek somewhere near Imbil, they have a "Yabba Creek". I visit "Borumba" deer park there often, the owners are friends of mine, And it is a good venue for a dark sky.
I wouldn't mind a trip to Bribie, haven't been there for 20 odd years.

Mike

I think it's the same one Mike. The Little Yabba Jeanette is talking about is between Ron's and Kenilworth. Go down through Maleny for about twenty minutes to half an hour. Check out the "Map to Cambroon". It doesn't show the creek but will give you an idea where it is.

Mike the place you are talking about is "Yabba creek"Little "Yabba Creek" is on the Kenilworth Maleny road between Booloomba Creek Road and Sunday Creek Road, which leads to Charllie Moreland camping area.
The site is on the Maleny side of the bridge over Little Yabba Creek, it is about 3 kilometres from my place.
There are BBQ's and tables , shade, grass, and and if you wish a dip in the Mary River.

I think Jeanette is thinking of Charlie Moorland Park, which is the first turn to the left heading north from Ron's. Little Yabba Creek runs alongside the park (or is that the Mary River, Ron?). Charlie Moorland Park is a camping ground. We used to camp there with the kids and friends about 20 years ago. The main thing I remember is heaps of goannas and snakes - all friendly of you throw them the remnants off the barby. I wanted to throw the kids but my wife wouldn't let me .

I would love to be at Ron's on the 16/17 Dec. but my brother-in-law and his family arrive from England on that weekend to spend Xmas with us. I'm not ready to commit suicide yet .

However, I'd like to put my hand up now for the next new moon at Ron's.

The bridge further on from the Charlie Moorland turnoff runs over Little Yabba Creek and there are BBQ areas on either side of the road there.

Nordo, the first turn left on the Maleny Kenilworth road past my place is
Booloomba creek road which leads to the Booloomba Creek camping area, about 500mtrs up the road towards kenilworth you come to the Little Yabba Creek picknick grounds, the next turn on your left over the bridge is Sunday Creek Road which leads to Charllie Moreland camping area

I'm trying to remember 20 years ago . But on my way to Ron's place I've seen the turn-off we used to take - about 1 or 2 km north of Ron's. The turn-off we used to take went through a pine plantation, then across a causeway (over the creek), and into the camping area. We always called it Charlie Moorland Park - maybe we were wrong?
