Leon whats going to change is the kg. If we keep our current system then we will have to adjust all calibrated scales. They are effectively trying to move away from weights and measures being a relative scale to being an absolute scale.
For example time is a absolute scale now the second is defined as
"the duration of 9192631770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the caesium 133 atom ".
it used to be based on the mean solar day that varies through out the year by about 30 seconds.
