Is Ballarat the most dangerous place on Earth??

Ballarat crime rate worse than New York's

Acc. to a news report on the ABC, on a per capita basis there are more violent crimes in Ballarat than New York! You are 4 times more likely to be assaulted in Ballarat than in NY!!

I would like to hear from locals what their take is on that.... Although having seen some of your mugshots here on IIS, maybe you are the ones skewing the statistics...

Theres a hill top radio tower site just out of Ballarat. I had a chat with a Vodafone tech who tells me that they arent allowed to go the site alone after dark.

Apparently the local druggies hang out up there and once one of the Vodafone techs gots bashed for just being there.

Hmmmm. Never heard that before!

I know that there are a lot of bored kids and a fairly large drug problem, but the Lydiard Street bashings that have increased lately have mainly been perpetrated by night-clubbers coming up from Melbourne, Melton etc. It's been a thing for many years (country v's city).

It was only a few years back that 3 car loads of blokes came up from Melbourne, run-a-muck, bashed patrons then shot 2 bouncers. Then got caught driving back to Melbourne at high speed blind drunk.

Molly Meldrum also came up to open a new night club here and they had to call the whole event off coz about 30 Melbourne guys came up to cause trouble 'Just so they could be on the News'.

Yep, Ballarat has it's problems like anywhere else, but I am at a loss to understand the statistics.

Up until 2 years ago I was a Youth worker in amongst the sub-culture of Ballarat for about 16 years and I know their boredom and drug problems. I would still rather walk the streets at night here than Melb/Sydney/New York etc.

But I never listen to Compaisons. Take Quiet little Snake Valley for example. So far this year we have had 3 crimes.
1. A mower was stolen from a shed.
2. a house was broken into (not by a local)
3. A car was stolen (then returned days later)

That's 3 crimes in a population of 250 people. That's even worse than Ballarats crime rate!!!
Comparisons don't always work!

Out-of-towners are our biggest problem.

Ken I reckon you could be right, you wont find me out in town later in the evening, and definitly never on a weekend night.
I even feel a bit nervy when i go out late to catch lightning strikes, all alone sitting in the car on some dark deserted track, and then a car comes along, and you hope in hell that it just drives past.

It can be pretty scary.

You are so right Leon!

Someone like me could drive along the dark country road, pull up, get out my gear, and keep you there for hours as I capture images!!!

And I wouldn't let you go until I was satisfied that I captured enough images.

I think they call it abduction

Statistics can be twisted. There are far more dangerous places Africa, parts of South America I could go on.
Israel has the highest resurrection rate!
