Re-greasing of the HEQ5/EQ6

i notace that my HEQ5 gets alittle stiff in cold conditions, and i have read that the black granite based grease that is put into them, gets stiff in cold conditions and contributes towards this.

dose anyone have any experiance with regreasing the HEQ5/EQ6?,
what was your method, dose it really improve the mount?

looking for some help and advice please

thanks

Adrian

Hi Adrian, I had to replace the 30 year old grease from my Unitron mount.
I spoke to Don Whiteman at Bintel and he recommended Superlube.
You only need a very small amount, it can handle temps from -40c to 100c, so it's perfect for the varying temps that astronomy brings. It won't run or freeze up.
I can't remember the supplier here in Sydney, but I'm sure a Google check will find it. Cheers, John.

Hi Adrian,
Havn`t had experiance with the HEQ5 only the EQ5. Made lots of difference in the way it run in smoothness and stiffness. I used a top quality bearing grease. The site below is well known and should give you all the basics.
I also diamond lapped the worm gears with a small micron diamond paste. This made lots of difference in RA error as well..

That superlube grease is the bee's knees and the astronomyboy site helped for stripping down my EQ3
