Ngc 6559

Exasperated by what has seemed like permanent cloud over Adelaide for the last two months, I just went ahead anyway and set up my gear on Saturday night, emboldened by a forecast of clear skies at some point. Stared menacingly at the clouds for a few hours before they finally got the hint!

I think seeing wasn't too great. But anyway, 4 hours of data on NGC 6559. RC8 scope and a QHY camera.

Done that myself a few times and surprising how often it actually works

Re your image, I was having another look and thinking maybe it could do with some more blue

Hmm. Yes, I'd been hoping for some more blue in those two bright areas of nebulosity to the left and right (if that makes sense). But they're more white than I'd expected. Can't seem to get them more blue without it looking unnatural beyond just small tweaks e.g. below. Any tips appreciated.

No you are quite right actually, the reflection neb on the right should actually be rather white from my understanding. There could perhaps be a little more blue in the neb area on the left though but I was actually talking about getting a little bit more blue in the general nebula in the area and toning the apple red down a tad...?

Just have a play until you are bored....and sick of my fussy suggestions

Nice shot Paul. Send a few of those stares up this way please. This is the cloudiest and wettest dry season I can ever remember.

That is a pretty nice image. The second one is probably more my favourite of the two as the magenta of the hydrogen is more visible.

I like the way you captured the luminosity around the dark dust lanes and in the most recent version the very faint reflection gas strips in that region have started to come out.

Something to work on a bit more but essentially a nice image. An example image I used was Jay Gabany's image of the same area. You will see some interesting similarities in your image.

No worries. I wasn't sure exactly of how it should look, but Paul's reference below should help. Would never get sick of your suggestions Mike! ... well, I think so at the moment

Thanks for that Rick. Yeah, hadn't really known that this object existed until recently. I guess it's a bit overshadowed by its glossy neighbours!
