1991 TeleVue Price List compared with 2015

I was Just looking through a 1991 Australian price list from one of the Sydney astro shops, which makes interesting reading. One thing is clear, Plossls were much more expensive than the Orthos.

1.25mm
1991 TeleVue Plossl 17mm $168.00,
2015 TeleVue Plossl 15mm $129.00

.96mm
1991 Carton Orthoscopic 18 mm $79.00

1.25mm
TeleVue Nagler type 2 16mm $599.00

Hmmm.... Not much of a comparison - there were many different manufacturers of orthos, some good, some not so god, and a few really awful ones.

Carton 0.96" eyepieces were fairly poor quality - about a 4 out of 10, I had a couple and threw them in the bin some years later. Edmunds RKE's (just 3 elements) were much better eyepieces, and cost less; I kept a set of these for many years eventually donating them to a worthy cause.

OTOH you could have picked Zeiss, whose orthos cost rather more, see for example http://company7.com/zeiss/products/czabbeoclr.html and the Zeiss ones are now collectible and have appreciated considerably if you have a full set in mint condition in the walnut box, e.g. http://www.astromart.com/classifieds...fied_id=674127

Yep, that's $700 apiece for 4-element 1.25" eyepieces with a 45 degree field. Sensible ?

Thanks for this Stewart it just goes to show how lucky we are these days . Food for thought for sure .

On the Carton orthoscopics , these are 'CircleT' made and are of very good quality , had to be to allow the excellent Carton objectives to perform at their best , and perform they do .

And yes Wavy , if I was going to spend $700 a pop on eyepieces I think TelVue would be top of my list , sadly I can only dream .

Brian.

Thanks Brian,

I really appreciate you telling me about the Carton /CircleT ortho, there appears to be very little info on the Carton eps....

I purchased it many years ago to fill the gap for a 60mm Amasco refractor that came with .96 Kellners 25 & 6mm made in Japan.

The 25mm Kellner and 9mm Carton ortho, both have great light transmission and are great looking at the moon through a Orion ED80!
