Canon 500D vs Nikon D5100

Just broke a 40D when trying to modify it by myself. One plastic film cable is broken during the last assembling step The damn tweezers had blade-like sharp edge and I didn't notice that.

Considering buying another second-hand DSLR and do it again. I'll be more careful this time.

I heard that the sensor of D5100 is much better than 500D in noise controlling, though 500D is one of the best among Canon APS-C's.

Anybody used both?

But my T-ring, CLS clip filter and remote shutter are all for canon.

So I want to know how much D5100 is better than 500D. If it's very significant, I may sell them all and get Nikon gears. I can't find any noise comparison between these two.
