Does anyone know where to still get wire-wrap wire?

Hey there all

I'm going to do the Philip Davis long exposure mod to my ToUcam when it arrives next week. I'd like to do a far neater job than what he shows on his website (wire diameter far too large with big ugly blobs of solder) - and that would include using small-gauge single-core insulated wire rather than what he used in the photos. I used to have heaps of this stuff having worked as an IBM CE back in the 80's, but don't know where it's all gone.

I've tried the usual places like Jaycar and DSE but they don't stock it any more - which is logical as wire-wraps are probably not really in fashion any more. I can get small-gauge wire, but not single-strand.

Anyone able to advise?

I have just a little of this stuff left myself. Came from a old vcr picked up at the back of retrovision, had lots of single core stuff inside. Maybe you can pick up a old vcr or tele and canabolise it?

Hi Chris,

In the industry, we refer to this type of wire as "Kynar" owing to the type of
insulation.

Call OKAY Electronic Solutions in Emu Plains on 02 4735 3126. The MOQ
is probably around 100m.

You can also source it through Farnells.

Search on Kynar.

Always stick to something with a larger conductor diameter for any power
or ground wiring.

Where I'm using it we don't need to carry anything other than low-power logic signals - and are just replacing/re-routing fine landpatterns on the circuit board.

Hi Chris,

Thank you.

Mai performed the modifications on a colleague's ToUcam several years
ago as a favour and the final imaging results were spectacular, so it is
a very rewarding exercise.

Eventually Richard went on to win the runner's-up award with it at the CWAS
competition a few years ago, so these little cameras can do OK in the hands
of skilled photographers.

Good luck with the project and we look foward to seeing some images in the
near future.

Jaycar have stocked it prev, and their catalogue / website still list it as available code WW-4344 to WW-4346 ( Red, black and blue )

Chris, the best wire for this kind of mods is enameled copper wire used for transformers. It comes in wide range of diameters, you will need 0.2 mm or so.
To remove the insulation, you just have to apply the hot soldering iron to burn it on the edges, Jaycar and Dick Smith have that wire in stock (on small reels) but you can also try to find old faulty transformer
To do this kind of mods I highly recommend you to use stereo microscope....
