Astronomers reveal more information

Astronomers reveal more information about binary star system J1906 - (full-timew)
For five years, an international team of researchers has been studying a pulsar dominated region of a binary star system called J1906 and it has now vanished. The researchers wanted to find more information about the companion star that was orbiting around it.

Scientists explained that as upon rotation it emits a beam of electromagnetic radiation. With the help of radio telescopes, scientists picked up the pulses coming from the star. But such was not the case with J1906, as the pulsar started to slip off the radar.

It gave an impression that the pulsar was spinning around its companion star and the mass of the latter makes it sink into a dip in space-time due to which the radio waves can no longer reach earth.

Lead scientist Joeri van Leewuen from the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy said the pulsar would be out of sight for nearly 160 years.

"By precisely tracking the motion of the pulsar, we were able to measure the gravitational interaction between the two highly compact stars with extreme accuracy", said co-author Prof Ingrid Stairs of the University of British Columbia, Canada.

Stairs said the pulsar and the star are heavier than our sun and that too by some 1.3 times and they get separated from each other by around one solar diameter. The extreme gravity leads to remarkable effects, said Stairs.
