Doomsday Prepors

There is a TV show.
Folk who are sure that the economy will collapse prepare for the day.
Out of the USA but they are probably in many countries.
These folk build bunkers stock pile food and water ..and of course weapons.
Some buy old missile installations, which I admit would be great to own, and set up for the end of the world.
I wonder are they crazy or smart?

Just seeing how "society" falls apart when the electricity goes off for a few hours makes me realise that to SOME extent, these people have a valid point.

The QLD floods a few years ago also aptly demonstrated that easily 95% of the population is VERY unprepared for any disaster of any kind.

When the phone lines went down once in Tabular you could not buy anything even with cash such was the reliance on computers.
Makes you wonder.

Even if they are "smart" you will have to come out of that bunker sometime.
With all the guns it will be like ISIS Gangs picking off the weaker ones.

I have felt from a young age "something would happen one day"
Having had recuring dreams of tsunamis engulfing Sydney from age 12-18.
The tsunamis came in 2004 but not Sydney.

Also the cold war ended, "cosmos Carl Sagan, said there were back then enough bombs or megatonage for each family on Earth" a single afternoon of ww2 every 5 minutes...!
When I finaly found a farm to "be prepared" 10 years ago.
The reality of trying to be self sufficient is extremely hard, with native animals eating your veges, feral dogs your meat and nieghbours goats, pigs etc running rampant.

I tried getting all the valley folk (neighbours) on side with outdoor movie nights once a month, but they all had their "issues" with each other, eventually I even had a mini war with my closest one when he shot my dog (becuase she barked at his cattle who were on my property as he never built a fence I gave him half the money for)
Anyway, what I am trying to say is, no matter how prepped you can be, how nice will it be to emerge and survive in the world of the walking dead(when they are not even zombies) but fellow humans gone feral!

..... that's grounds for a lifelong feud. He's demonstrated sufficient emotional instability to warrant having his firearms licence removed I would think?

I like to think I could work with my neighbours in an emergency rather than fighting them off to defend what's mine.

How many of his cattle did you fence into your property afterwards in compensation?
All, I hope.

Woah.... so much negative vibes here. Cheer up people. 2015 is right around the corner. Life is good. Don't worry too much about the end of the world. Tomorrow is another day.

I kept a few that wandered into my cattle bails paddock, but "the law" says he has to be sent a letter to collect them before I could sell them.
I left my gates open after that so they all got out, and had to be rounded up and transported at his cost. (Funny how they all suddenly stopped grazing on my side for near 2 years after that?)
Now I actually get paid agistment fees monthly....still hasn't made up for 8 years agistment and my half of the non finished fence.Nor the loss of my dog.
His gun got confiscated after he left it out one morning on the kitchen table after shooting white cockatoos, by spot police inspection. He was out driving his unregistered car on the road but they let him off with a caution on both counts. But had to wait 8 months to get his gun back.
There were other guerila tactics I used, when he began digging into the hill side causing the creek platypus hole to be filled in and mud slides onto the public road, but he had friends in council, EPA did nothing.

My wife loves this program. She can never have enough nutters on TV.
I find it difficult to fathom that any EMP/Tsunami/Financial Crisis would bring civilization to a standstill for as long as it takes to re-schedule "Real Housewives"
If things got REALLY bad, not one of these preppers I've seen is even remotely prepared for a long siege by say a desperate army regiment or bike gang - far more likely than a lone boy scout troop or ramblers.

Its not all BS, and having some essentials stacked away just in case doesn't make you crazy, but to think they'd survive a major catastrophe is wishful thinking. I think.

As a child of the 80's (when I really became WWIII aware) I used to buy books and learned much of what life would be like. No thanks
I always said if I was given enough warning I'd go outside and wait for the flash. Hopefully I'd be close enough to knowing more.

I figure those on farms would have the best chance to survive. Far enough away from the bangs and having knowledge to grow and feed themselves.
Guns are the biggest post war issue. Too many bad people have them and us law abiding citizens don't.

The future will be for those with the most guns. As much as I'd love to take out as many of those as I could I don't own any guns today.

Sounds like one I'd hunt down first
