thread I was following has gone missing, that's 3 or 4 in the last couple weeks, just for being a bit too close to the bone, no wonder people are leaving or opting out. So I've decided not to participate in posts anymore but will still visit for research only (if that's allowed) so this is not a goodbye post as such so is not against the terms and conditions of this Big Brother Board.

Not that I'll be missed, as the vast majority of people on here are cliquey in the extreme and only talk to each other, have no sense of humour, and seem to think the rest are below them. I would though like to thank Richard Russell, OSG, Mental4astro, Suzy, Brian N. and xelasnave for their help and entertainment.

This is not a cry for help or to seek attention, just saying it as it is.

Sorry you feel that way Johnny. I think that as it is an Astronomy site, the admin have to keep some of the more extreme discussions under control or remove them. I don't have an issue with that as I have always felt that it should be more about fostering a mutual interest in Astronomy and related subjects rather than trying to debate or cure the world's ills.

As we have seen recently those discussions that centre around sex, religion or race issues as well as those of a political nature tend to create much disharmony among people whose real common reason for being here is the love of the night sky.

I for one am sorry to see you go. I'm certainly not cliquey; am happy to talk with anyone. I can see where you are coming from to a certain extent though. I think that it is inevitable that some people with like
interests within astronomy will gravitate towards each other, especially
in the larger centres of population where some of them might be able to meet face to face, and actually become friends outside of IIS. Amateur
astronomy, by it's very nature, attracts a fair number of people of
higher than average intelligence and education, and therefore the odd
big ego here and there.

Couldn't agree more. We have some robust discussions here but they can get personal at times and you take your chances. I've certainly had the odd post removed and had to agree in hindsight.

Stick to the science is a good way to avoid being modded...

Quite frankly, if the thread I assume you are talking about is the one I am thinking of, it really should come as no surprise it was removed. The TOS is very clear on what topics are to be avoided. And there was a clear warning by Mike in the thread that it was risking being deleted if people didn't pull their heads in.
This is not a "free speech" issue, you join the forum, you accept the rules.
There are lots of other places on the web to talk about almost any subject.

Like you said, we don't need leaving posts.
You're more than welcome to stay and join in on discussions on almost any topic. There's plenty of science and astronomy related topics to enjoy - there's plenty of 'general chat' discussions to enjoy.

There's a select few to avoid.

Plenty of unmoderated forums and places to discuss anything you want. Sticking to what you came here for, is a great rule of thumb to go by.
