Half hour horsehead - with improved alnitak

Hi all,

Had a quick go at Alnitak - i mean the flame neb and HH.
1 minute subs and half an hour of data. Will make a proper go of it when i get a light pollution filter.

30 x 1min subs iso 1600.

Cheers,

Russ

I really need to learn how to blend these high dynamic subjects or choose more consistent brightness objects!

Nice going for a quick one Russ. I hear you mate, every time I learn something new to overcome one of my processing issues that I have had, another one crops up..... Keep at it mate you've got a good result for such short subs. Can't wait to see it with more data.

Russell why not try layering it, mask out Altinak and insert a shorter exposure of it. Folks do this all the time on M42s bright trapezium area. I am keen to try that myself if the cloud ever gs away.

Hi Glen, yes - perhaps, i'm not sure how people deal with alnitak it is a difficult one to process, mine looks a bit funny as it gave a double halo around the star - with my already short subs 1min. the darker outer halo stands out as a ring in this version and you can see it in the saturated original.

I might try loop it and try and increase the exposure here. I found after masking it I had to invert the mask and still stretch the curves a bit to help it match the brightness quite a way from the star.

I have already tried a few things to even it out such as https://www.flickr.com/photos/803366...ream/lightbox/
blurring it.

I feel as though this is harder / a bit different from the trapezium as lesser exposure leaves a black hole around the star while the trap reveals gas, stars and perhaps easier to blend. i'll definitely give it a better go when I filter up, perhaps go really short, medium and long for the curtain.
