Brisbane lecture tonite

Briscience is putting on another lecture tonight at City Hall..

http://www.physics.uq.edu.au/brisscience/

a recent lecture was Brian Schmidt of the ANU. This latest lecture is on science and religion, which is something that appeals to many on this forum.

It does look interesting, even though this is more philosophy than science.

It is interesting how the scientific method and scientific explanations for how the material world around us has made belief in God optional, as it has provided an alternative explanations on how we can to be.

The rise of scientific explanations has meant that religious texts and dogma are no longer the only authority of how the world was created. This is why fundamentalist religion finds science (and especially biological evolution) threatening.

Interestingly, science has also divorced spirituality from religion, and people can now seek their own meaning in a more pluralist society, with competing ideas and philosophies.
