Yup. Had a tornado up on the NW Coast in Burnie last night (about 50k away)
'Unusual' would be an understatement

Sustained wind speeds of 154km/h or more would be a Category 2 cyclone (if it were tropical). But I guess for you hardy souls, it's just "a bit breezy".

Tas wind

Ha! Just went outside to get some tools from the obs and a couple of chairs went flying by. Not mine !!
Last year the wind broke my weather station.
I live on the side of mount Wellington so we get those ? Baric winds coming down to smash us unbelievers !!
Makes me worry for my newt out there in its scope stuff coat !

Cheers
Graz

Maatsyker Island has had sustained winds over 100km/h since 5:30pm, in other words for the last 9 hours with gusts well over 100km/h since 6am yesterday! I don't think even hurricanes last this long at a given location. The BOM obs are quite phenomenal.

Mt Wellington peak gust 152km/h. Look up the Tassie obs on the BOM website, look at the western coastal and highland stations. Amazing stuff.
