Canon SLR and recording live view (low frame rate)

I'd love to use backyardEOS or the free EOSMOVREC to get the
(close to) 1:1 pixel ratio....
but i can't seem to record faster than 10 frames per second....

is this normal?

My lappie ain't exactly a monster, but even on my fairly
decent desktop i can't get anywhere near the 30fps (or 50fps if you record in 720p) of the SLR....

Does recording speed depend on the spec of the PC its connected to?
are there any tweaks anyone is aware of?

cheers

I haven't done it in a while but from memory I used to get ~20fps with my 5DmkII on my lappy.
Both BYE and EOSMOVREC write uncompressed avis I think - so BIG files, and if your harddrive isn't quick enough that will be the bottleneck. My lappy has a SATA3 SSD so the bottleneck for me was always the camera and it's usb connection.
