Telephone Pole Stopover

Terrestrial photography is neither my forte nor an area of interest for me. Here is the one and only of it's kind that I have taken, using my 120ED telescope with a Sony A550 connected to it. Spotted resting on a telephone pole in the outer Melbourne suburbs in early January of this year.

Birds are not my strong point either! If I were to guess, I would say that this is a Heron but if anyone with more experience in said area can provide more information, I welcome it. Whatever sort of bird it may be, I'd never seen one like it and haven't since.
