Milky Highway

I was working late shift and decided to head out after work. I just drove without any real idea on where to go. Ended up about 45 mins out of Hobart near Hamilton which is a nice dark spot. I was hoping to find some sort of point of interest but all I had to work with was the road. So this is what I ended up with until ice started forming on my gear haha.

Magellanics on the left

Taken with my Canon 5DmkII + 16-35mm f/2.8 lens
25 second exposures and 3200iso
Around 20 shots stitched together to make the pano.

Very nice James well done Did you have to dodge any cars mid pano?

I was out taking a similar shot when a ute came roarring up the dirt road. I grabbed the camera, hopped on the grass and waited for it to pass.

It's pitch black and all I can see are these car lights getting closer. I like all the other Nocturnal Australian Native Animals stand there and stare... then just moments before the ute passes me I notice a massive cloud of dust being whipped up like a dust storm behind the car aaarrrrhhh Sh*t!!! No time to think, I rip off my shirt and cover the camera up just in time, meanwhile every orifice on my head is being filled with red dirt and I'm pleased my camera and lens are safe.

The joys of nightscaping

I was fortunate that the road didn't have frequent traffic on it but I would get the occasional Mack truck roaring down the road. You would hear it coming miles away which gave you plenty of warning. I think I attempted this pano 2-3 times before I got a sequence uninterrupted by trucks haha! Yeah certainly the joys of trying to shoot in the middle of the road at night!

Makes me think of the passage to the next life from Egyptian mythology. Wonder how old Pharoh would respond to a picture like this... Very inspiring....
