M83 with old genesis

Hi Guys,
I have been following all your great shots for sometime now and have got up enough courage to put up a thread (and starting to get the hang of this too!!! after about a year)..
Heres a shot from a few weeks back of m83..
7x5 min at 800iso with my old genesis 100mm f/5 and canon 300d.
Let me know what you think..

Gary,

Nice attempt there.

Did you shoot in JPG? The artifacts are quite evident. The core of the galaxy is a bit burnt out, too. But, there's nothing a bit of Photoshop's levels and curves can't fix (apart from the noisy artifacting).

Were you guiding? What software did you use for the stacking and development?

Hi Gary

That is a very nice image - looks stunning to see M83 just hanging there in space. Your black point may be too severe; I think its called histogram clipping? Basically, if you chose a point on the histogram to call black, anything less than this becomes black. So, dark grays will become black and it's here where you may have clipped the data.

Not a big issue, but something to consider.

Thanks guys for the comments, I always use raw to capture and darkframe subtract. I stack in registax and then adjust levels and etc in Photoshop. Don`t use the curves much. All that was done was levels and brightness and contrast adjusted and removed some noise...
I think I might have overdone the contrast a bit...
Having only 500mm focal length doesn`t help with small objects either. its very small on the full frame..
All shots guided but my mount is really not up to accurate guiding, somedays its good other days its a A#*...but still fun to do!!!!
I will give that pic another workover tonight...

Thanks Lee and Andrew for the comments......Heres the redone pic. I think its a bit better color balanced and I tied not to overdo the core of the galaxy. Havn`t done many galaxy pics yet...soo much to learn!!! !

Hi Gary,

Wonderful image of M83. You have done a very good job, not that I am anything, but a beginner in this field. Is the Genesis a achromatic refractor, just wondering about the blue around the brighter stars?

I wouldn`t class the genesis myself as a APO more of a semi-APO there is still a small amount of false color there....
Thanks everyone I like all the comments, its the only way to move forwards and learn how to get ahead..

. I shall try to post a pic every week or two and see if I go in the right direction!!!!...
PS: ordered a GM-8 yesterday that shall make it easier to guide. Bank account now very sad..

Good colour balance there too, a nice yellow core of M83, as it should be
