Some people depict Mars as South up, and others North up. Is there a convention on that or is it simply artistic preference?

thank you. I think that there may have been a South up convention for representing things as they appear through a scope in the northern hemisphere. I like to show things more or less as they appear in the sky in the southern hemisphere. However, there are many who prefer the euro-centric view of cartography, so attached is the other way up

Really impressive.
Jupiter must be very low for you is SA. It is very low for me in Brisbane! Impressive result given the altitude!

Thanks Doug. yes, Jupiter is right down in the weeds and this is my first attempt for the season - couldn't get up enough enthusiasm to even try until recently.

Thanks John, was nice to image something close for a change. Seeing was that flickery stuff that we all know so well, so there wasn't much contrast in the detail.
I certainly wouldn't say your images look flat - you have produced some real beauties just lately.
