Telstra 4G wont connect, some suggestions please

Hi guys, I have my updated desk top back after a total rebuild, and obviously all programs have to be loaded on to this machine again.

This is no problem, however I cant seem to be able to get my telstra Wirless 4G network to work at all.

For the desktop I have had to use an adapter to make it a wireless connection and this has worked fine on the old machine.

I was wondering because i have now been updated to Windows 8.1 is the adapter still recognized or do i have to buy another suited to windows 8.1

You'll need to go to Telstra's web site and download the appropriate drivers for your modem for Windows 8.

That's my guess.

I may be misinterpreting but it sounds like you're saying you have one of those little devices that is a 4G modem and a wifi hotspot kind of thing. Then you connect to it from your laptop via wifi?

If this is the case then it sounds like you don't have the wifi hardware driver installed or some other issue affecting the wifi on your computer, it should have nothing to do with the Telstra device as any computer/tablet/phone should be able to see it as a wifi network and connect to it.

If you know the brand of the wifi card in your computer then google it and "windows 8 wifi driver" and see what you can find.

Leon, IIRC from previous discussions your 4G acts as a wireless hotspot. I have one of those Telstra 4G hotspots.

Is this adapter some Telstra specific thing or is is an over-the-counter WLAN (wireless LAN) adapter - probably USB. If it is a WLAN adapter, either:

1. Windows should be able to find the right drivers,
2. the manufacturer will have Win8 versions, or
3. the manufacturer reckons there is no money in writing and certifying Win8 drivers and you'll have to buy a new one that is Win8 certified.

Hi Leon,

PM me your phone number, there is a number of things it could be, from DNS to drivers, but it would be easier to talk you through it, I have free calls from my home phone package so even your mobile number will be fine.

Hi Chris, thank you for your suggestion, don't get me wrong, it is not that i don't know how to set it up, it is just that Windows 8.1 wont accept the Netgear setup disc.

Maybe i have to buy a new one that is compatible with this edition of Windows, I will get back to you if trouble persists, thanks again.

I doubt it's telstras problem, sounds more like a driver issue with your adapter.

No problems.

If the driver disc wont run, try right clicking on the setup program on the disc and seeing if you can run it in windows 7 compatibility mode or use Matt's link for 8.1 drivers.

Well this is just ridiculous, I get a newly built computer with the latest version of windows 8.1 and it cant even handle a WiFi connection.

Today I bought a new WiFi adapter for this machine and made sure it was compatible with Win 8.1 but that was not possible, could only get one up to Win 8.0, so i figured that would be OK.

Well, no it was not, although it loaded the driver, and told me to connect to my WiFi account it still could not give me a internet connection.

So i reckon I might just backtrack to Win 7.

Very frustrating.

Leon, does Windows show up a list of available wifi networks when you click the wifi thing on the taskbar?
And if so when you connect to yours does it say it's worked but then you still don't have the net?

If so it sounds like the wifi hardware/drivers are fine and it's the Telstra wifi thing.

If not I guess it could be the drivers and my only advice would be the obvious, check you've got the correct drivers installed properly.

Leon, if it connects to WIFI OK and show you have an IP address, then I suggest it is a DNS problem, which is well documented about windows 8.1

Go into the IPV4 properties of the wifi connection, set the MANUAL DNS settings button on and then put 8.8.8.8 as the primary DNS server and 8.8.4.4 as the secondary DNS server, click apply, switch to a browser and see if you can now browse the net.

Telstra crowd support has all manner of issues with windows 8.1 DNS listed and this seems to get around the issue of how windows 8.1 looks up DNS.

That is, of course, assuming the wifi device ACTUALLY can connect to the wifi router and give you an IP address

Well, I am in, many thanks for all the help, the starnge thing is i figured i would have another go and just plugged the adapter in again and away it went.
