Is this going too far?

Finally got around to stacking all the subs I had on Helix, and the tonne of calibration frames (40 each Dark, Flat, dark flat and bias). DSS stacked for a change, which wasn't the best alignment, but for some reason a LOT less noisy than the PixInsight version (still learning it anyway).

Pure 6nm H-a with the SBIG ST-8XE. Overtretched top layer blended. New top layer also denoised as much as I dare, then Luminosity blended. Probably sharpened just a touch too much with the masked stars.

Opinions appreciated.

Hi Lewis,

That looks pretty good but there are still quite a few hot pixels visible inspite of the 40 darks. did you dither? unless adding darks don't normally remove them. did you use sigma clip?

do you have a higher res version? hard to see too much with the compressed version. you've got the fainter extents quite prominent so that's good.

Cheers
Alistair

It's a stack through DSS, which gives me inferior results compared to PixInsight. I have run it through PI, and the noise is VERY low - almost non-existant.

Hi Lewis, looks great to me. You probably already know this but just in case you don't, in DSS there is a tick box that you can check to detect and remove hot pixels. NOt saying that it will do as good a job as PI but if that box isn't ticked then it wont remove them.
