9" refractor lens set on ebay

Saw this on ebay, what a monster lens.

"Bousch & Lomb 9 inch Telescope / Camera Lens

This is a very large lens cell with a set of lenses arragned to yeild an effective focal length of 168" (4267mm) or 14 ft. It appears to be a military design and most like was military surplus. It is an f/ 18 which would make it an awesome planet killer. The set is encased in a steel cell which is very heavy ( 82 lbs.) so you might want to remount the lenses. The front lens has some discoloration on the surface and there are a couple of small scratches in the coatings but overall the lens is very useable.

It comes in a metal case to securely keep it.

If you are looking to build a unique and massive observatory telescope that will be the envy of all your friends, here it is."

If I was looking for a large objective I'd be looking for something more modern - Better glass, antireflection coated, and faster focal ratio. Starting with these gems http://www.professional-telescopes.n...OS-Apochromats and from a reputable maker.

I wouldn't be taking a punt on an old uncoated achro objective with no credible documentation concerning its quality, that big.

Mmmm... There's a reason it's only $900...

Bear in mind a 10" dob or SCT will outperform this, on all scores.

I was wondering what a 9" f18 refractor would look like. Found this image, not quite f18.

Hey Wavey , its a 'Military' spec B&L it will be a very nice lense for that price , old does not necessarily mean bad as lots of people today seen to think .
If I still had my engineering business I would jump at this as Lewis says , but sadly ,, no .

Hehe Brian, I used the Oddie most Monday nights for 4 years... I know full well what a 9" f/16 achro is like. I also know what long reflectors can do too, and a 16" f/7 dob is a hell of a lot better choice as well as a lot easier to mount and use.

well done , but that was the old Oddie , this new one with the Istar lense will be lots better , I hope you get a chance to look thru the new one when its finished , it sounds like you are the one to see any differences .
Look forward to that , if possible .
Brian.

That 16" f/7 dob would be a long tube...the budget brands only do f/5 on anything bigger than an 8" reflector.

Here is a pic of a 16" f/6

Matt

There is another 150 SW achromat locally, on an EQ5 mount, for only $700. I am sorely tempted, but I wont.

I have my FL102S for visual now - don't need ANYTHING else.

Dobsonians leave me cold. Just don't like em. Even pushing an EQ mount around manually is far more enjoyable to me
