Seriously nauseated - by all the sports talk on IIS

Not sure if this comment should go here or in the website feedback area.

It would be nice if there were a thread area set aside for sports comentaries only. I don't care if my comments leave me as 'popular as a pork chop in a synagogue' or not, but I am utterly fed up with having sport shoved down my throat morning noon and night

. For me, it is twice as boring and half as edifying as watching paint dry. Whilst I respect the right of others to revel in things sportish, I would find it really usefull if each and every thread on sport were suitably flagged or placed so that I could simply avoid opening them.

I don'y ask my chemist for a_farm either....I insist on generic suppliers who also carry out their own Pharmaceutical R&D; that way I help future advances in medication

Hmm, I'm not big on sports in general either, but I don't think there are enough threads on sport for it to have its own forum. Besides, it's not astronomy related so it belongs in General Chat, and giving it its own forum would probably attract more posts on the topic so you'd probably be even more unhappy. Surely, if you're not interested, it's not that hard to avoid the few sports threads that pop up from time to time.

As Steve said, if they're in general chat, and they're titled appropriately (so you know it's about sport), it's easy enough to just not open that thread.

Use the "Mark Forums Read" link to mark all threads read once you've finished reading the ones of interest.

Sorry, Doug, I'm of Steve's thinking. There's nothing wrong with a bit of side chat on subjects outside astronomy, whether that be sport or philosophy, is there?

Certainly there is a huge number of sites dedicated to various sports but surely we are not all so narrowly focussed that we can't pass the odd comment or two on other matters (though I'd draw the line at politics and religion).

So far I have considered this site to be akin to a social gathering with advice and discussion on astronomical subjects being its main thrust but, like any other meeting of minds, one where the conversations will stray.

On all the forums on ICEINSPACE if it's not in my interest I don't read them it is as simple as that, one dosn't have to be Einstien to work that out, only go to the threads that grab you,has as been noted it is for General Chat and the World Cup is Big at the moment

I think I can understand your feeling Doug the prominance of sport in news coverage and the recent soceer thing has probably left you with no place to escape its presentation

....your last hope iceinspace seems to be going over to the dark side

. But look on the bright side if sport had not been present here you would not have the opportunity of venting the frustration of continual presentation of the same meal where ever you looked

.
And I confess I feel the same way at times but thinking about it I would rather a nation of sports fanatics than a nation of warrior fanatics and you gotto keep them occupied until the testosteron in either settles

.

I have to agree with you Doug, Even though sport is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, our "media" can't help itself and has to report ad nauseum on every single muscle twing, especially cricket & football.
With every trip to a school or open night for our club, I try and push to the kids and parents that there is more than just sport in their lives.
If you're a good story spinner and have a good clear sky + telescope, you can show others the wonder of the universe and WIN them over, with something other than sport. My 2 cents.

I have to agree with the Sport coverage on TV lately. They have the news which consists of "we won/lost the soccer", "some footy gorilla has been dropped", "a tennis jock got married"...blah blah blah. Then "more about that in the sport coming up"...I wish they had something like the news groups where you could see all the articles they are going to think about talking about and you can choose to see the ones you want! I'd rather then fill the "missing time" with test pattern...more exciting.

While I am at it, why do so many shows run 5 minutes over lately? Don't they have a clock?

Provided people title the thread to indicate it has a sport content and keep them in here, I will just skip them.

What I hate the most about sport on the TV/radio is the endless repetition boring dry numerics, like cricket scores. It's worse than listening to the stock market report! I do like the way Roy and HG do sports though!

Dont you like Saturday afternoon when you can get..rugby on 2, afl on7 , soceer on sbs, I think more afl on 10 and league on 9(forgive me the channel references are probably incorrect but you will take my meaning)
Now is that not a great sporting afternoon where you can sit on your butt being able to participate in whatever sport you like.. summer throw cricket into the mix...
so dont you just love having the wonderful alternative entertainment..."big brother"....

And to think our ancestors missed all these wonders the poor devils only had the night sky to look upon.

To have a section for Sports only would mean having another 50 or more sections for all other bits and peices like "T.V programs" which people like to comment about or "My new car" or "My new job" etc etc etc. I understand your point Doug and hope my point makes sense as well. If the thread topics are worded right, we all look at the ones that interest us and if they don't, just don't open it.

Wha! Heresy!!! the 'opium of the masses'! we are talking about here! this is an Aussie forum after all, and thats and what aussies are all about, isnt it?(apparently) what would we make small talk about if it wasnt for sport?
How would politicians get unpopular laws passed and win specifically timed elections if it wasnt for the endless distraction of bread and circuses! what would Howard regularly soften his draconian image whilst turning oz into a Thatcherite paradise? 'he's a good bloke, he likes his sport doesnt he?'
What would all the bonehead jocks do? no more breathless hyperventilating after game/match/laps interviews littered with gems like: 'I got a lot of self belief in meself'.
And I agree with Alex, you got to give people an outlet for their bloodthirsty primitive warlike tribal instincts (besides fishing).
And re anyone calling soccer boring, what about swimming!!? the sport we excel at the most on the world stage! man I want to gouge my eyes out and perform a self labotomy when they have ten hours of swimming on tv - I am positively catatonic if I catch even a glimpse of that on tv. Nothing beats that for boring!
Lighten up dude - just go with the flow - or you could find yourself on a pacific island detention centre for subversion or sedition.

and oh yes and ... GO THE CROWS!!

Doug, I agree that it can be a bit annoying when a thread's title does not properly describe its content that you are not interested in. But that also happens with topics other than sports. There probably are some sports threads, but right now I cannot think of any thread other than the one you mention that did not have a descriptive enough title to be able to tell that they are about sport. So how does this sound?: Whenever I notice a sports thread with an ambiguous title I'll append it if I can to make it clearer what it is about.

Edit: Some sports are better watched live and are not really suited to
TV. becuase unfortunately TV lacks atmosphere of being there.
I dont like watching AFL much, but have you ever been to a match
the atmoshpere is amazing, the best of any aussie sports. I agree
that threads should try to title them selves so folks can choose not
to enter but then again I have this funky "Back Button" which works
pretty well.

btw there called 'statistic's' and 'scores' Steve ..not numerics

and big brother is de-evolution in motion, very interesting to watch from that point of view
