why not consider buying new from Mathew Lowell in South Australia? that's where I bought mine and his pricing is very sharp compared to anyone else.
and you really dont need to buy the Coronado hard case..just get a tool box from Supacheap -for around $30 from memeory-and the foam inserts fit perfectly
Narayan
he sells the PST for $800 which compares very favourably with anyone else. His turn around time was quick too..I got a nice package on my doorstep a couple of days after I made the payment

Ok here is the deal, I've had a few offers thus far. There is one thing that
is concerning me (which I thought Coronado had fixed around 2004, but
apparently not) That is the de-laminating of the objective lens and filter.
This was/is a defect on the part of the manufacturer. And covered under
warranty. This can be easily seen by looking at the outer edge of the
objective and you may notice some mottling. Because of this I'm am
leaning towards a brand new model so I have warranty if such a defect
becomes present. I really dont wont to be shelling out $600.00+ to find
I have this problem and more than likely no recourse for warranty. It's also
why I asked the folks who replied to take photo's of the objective lens.
This needs to be done with the scope pointing directly at a light source
(preferably the sun) with the camera aimed at aprox' 45 degree angle
to the objective filters face.
yes its a real problem and one I have experienced and really glad I had the warranty. meant to affect only a small proportion of PSTs but I was one of the unlucky ones
but Coronado do warranty for 30 months so you may be Ok even if you buy used?
I will try and email Coronado, and find out if the warranty still applies in
the event of a PST being on sold. I would say unfortunately prolly not.
Still at this stage, I feel I would be taking a gamble with the warranty
issue.
I have known about this problem for sometime, it first appeared on
the solar observers & talking telescopes groups some months ago, and
is still cropping up from time to time. Damn shame really...
I've uploaded an image that was in a discussion on Cloudy Nights. You
can see the dis-colouration or mottling, which is more prominant towards
the top and bottom of the objective.
So you guy's know. I have decided to go for a brand new one. Thanks for
the replies, much appreciated and sorry for the inconvenience. But I just
dont want to take the gamble.
Does this defect actually make the PST unsafe, or the images inferior?
Cheers,
Brian.
There is that fear, but I couldn't be sure. From what I can see Coronado
have taken steps to fix the defect, so I can only think they want to play
it safe. I mean, we are pointing a scope at the sun any failier of the filter
could be catastropic to your eyesight. But most things I hear are yes
they have the defect but dont notice any image quality loss, or yes I
have the defect and the view is a lil soft towards the EFOV.
I have never personally seen it in the fleash, only images of it.
