For those acquainted with Brisbane, especially during Expo 88, they will remember Stefan's Needle that was at West End. Well, while I was trying to image (and I mean trying - I gave up in frustration, but that's another story!) I noticed this beam of light coming from that general direction. I'm not sure if they dismantled the needle but if not it may have been fired up again! Isn't that just dandy!!
Does anybody know what this light might be if it's not Stefan's Needle?
As an aside, I've also taken a series of images at different exposure lengths, all at ISO3200 which I've collated into one image and attached here. I found it interesting at just how much light is around in what I considered "dark" conditions!!
I'm close to the city and it was like a bloody aurora overhead last night. Didn't seem to affect my narrowband subs much but the Lum frames for plate solving looked a fright
I was testing some gear outside last night. Could see a static beam of light emanating from the city, but it wasn't sweeping past like the sky needle normally did. Glad I was only testing.
I recall people being able to see the light from the sky needle over 100km away during Expo 88.

David, it has worked since Expo88, and if you may remember it caught fire some time ago.
I have seen it's light here in Cambroon.
The people of Warwick could apparently see it as well.
Cheers
unfortunately it is Brisbane festival .. starts next week and ends with river fire at the end of the month.
waste of money and resources I say.
the 80s were good I'm sure the pacific highway between the gold coast and brissy was still just a 2 way highway with a few overtaking lanes chucked in.
It's ironic that this thread is immediately above one on "Bringing back the night."
We used to see Stefan's atrocity out here at TenChain as it swept in an arc around the sky - but I haven't noticed it for several years now. But the skyglow from Brisbane is a constant and insidious presence out here even without Stefan's phallic symbol blazing away. We lose a good 20 degrees of eastern sky because of it and the light corridor up to and including Caboolture.
Sad ain't it. When we were primitive hunter-gatherers, fear of the dark was a good thing. If you didn't fear the dark you died. It's something that's still programmed in us and the reason that displays such as the unfortunately-named Mr Assness are putting on are so successful is that they are an exultation, conquering the dark and all our primal fears, however much on the surface people might think they're just plain 'purty'. Until we get over it and realise we don't need to fear the dark anymore (a lion's not going to spring out and eat you if you leave the verandah light off), then we'll keep getting abominations like this.
