Looking up

Astronomy is one area in which European cooperation has been an out-standing success. In Europe's Quest for the Universe, Lodewijk Woltjer, former director general of the European Southern Observatory, has written the history. Giovanni Bignami reviews it favourably: make it required reading for students, he says, as it takes the right approach to the phenomenology of the Universe. The first chapter is downloadable from http://tinyurl.com/gsplk.
