Grand Canyon at night

The Moon was pretty bright last night, and it illuminated the Canyon beautifully.
I travelled there with three friends, Heather (from NASA), Amjad and Richard (space geeks from the UK). We joined up in Flagstaff and have since driven down together to Tucson to attend SpacefestV. I just caught up with our Petra there this evening.
This is a 3 panel pano taken at Mather Point, plus a couple of single 30 second shots taken there.
It was very windy and quite chilly.
Calling it the Grand Canyon is an understatement. My first reaction on seeing it was to cry. It invokes emotions that beyond description.
Photos cannot do justice to it either. It is something you have to experience with your own eyes.
I'll probably add more photos as I get around to processing them.
PS. I can't believe I stood on the very edge of the Canyon to capture a handful of the images last night. Stepping beyond the barriers to do it. I don't "do" heights at a rule. My stomach usually leaps from my mouth and my heart goes into spasms. But it was worth getting blown off the edge to catch the views.

Thanks Mike.
I so wished it could have been new Moon. But one makes the very best of the situation at hand.
We were there for Sunset too. But only one or two photos turned out any good. Too busy taking it all in to bother with the camera.

Hi,

Lovely views, may I use one or two as a screensaver etc?

I have been to Mather Pt, so am not cheating too much, although my shots aren't nearly this good.

Incidentally, you mention the impact of the place when you see it for the first time, so true. One of my favourites is this scene of the first known European to see it, Don Diego de Cardenas, who reached the Canyon in September 1540.

Stunning JJJ. I shot a panorama from that exact point. Much easier at night without the huge crowds. Horseshoe bend is another amazing site further down in Utah.

The helicopter ride across the canyon is worth it also.

Greg.

Great photos Enjoy your trip Jeanette, the Grand Canyon is such a spectacular place, and so are the sunsets!
I arrived at the edge one summer day 13 years ago, at the end of a long bicycle ride from Flagstaff AZ. The experience is incredible and I certainly felt like a true explorer

I can certainly relate to your experiences Jeanette. We were there about
3 years ago at that very same spot and I can recall the wonder of the awesome size and eons of time that it has taken to create the canyon.
We were also quite cold and had to buy extra clothes there.
The day before we were flying from Memphis to Las Vegas over the Canyon and the pilot of the plane dipped his wings on both sides, so people on both sides of the plane could get better views and take photos while flying on each side of the canyon. I think it is about 270 miles long so we saw just about all of it.
Have a good time and safe journey home.
