Leaving Windows for the new iMac

Hi Guys, I am considering leaving Windows behind and going for the new iMac.
However I am not real familiar with its pros and cons so to speak, and was wondering dose it have the ability to load the same sort of software as Windows.

For example can I load up Adobe PS, and/or Canons utilities disc that comes with the camera, or any other software that i might choose.

Is one limited to what it can do.

Many thanks in advance, and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi Leon,

Make the move, you won't regret it.

There are Mac versions of Photoshop, I'm pretty sure that the cannon software also runs on a Mac.

I run my observatory on a Mac Mini, it runs TheSky X which handles everything except the focusser, which I have to run VMware in a small window. That's the absolute beauty of this system, you can run both operating systems at once.

I have to boot into Windows to run my planetary image capture software though as VMware doesn't handle the Firewire camera. Small price to pay.

Thanks Stuart, The new machine (iMac) would only be for normal duties, so to speak, not for Astro stuff, as I have a lappy that dose all that anyway.

I was just considering stepping up a bit, and seeing that I do a lot of photography was wondering if it would be suitable.

I just want to do normal computer stuff with it, not any imaging and the like.

For photography stuff you would notice no difference between MacOS and Win7/8. Have a play with both and choose the one you like

Technically, there are Windows versions of Photoshop, as it was originally written for the Mac platform.

There is also Lightroom for the Mac, which is better suited for photography purposes IMO. And of course, on the Mac you can get Aperture, which is even better.

There are no limits Leon, and if you find a windows only app, you can run windows on the MAC anyway!

DPP works on Mac OS X beautifully.

As does EOS Utility.

You will find that when a new version of OS X comes out, it takes a few months for Canon to update their software. DPP will continue to work, but, EOS Utility sometimes needs an update which can take a few months.

+1 on the Macs Leon, we are a 'mac' family with iMac 27", 24", 21.5"?, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad, and iBookG4 in current usage.
(the iMacs are also setup to run Windows)
