Imaged Saturn last night, targeting the dark oval in the NNTrZ.
Have 2 R, 2 RGB & 1 742nm IR data sets over a session of 90 minutes. The seeing was fair.
The dark oval is clearly visible in all data sets. In the first R & RGB images the bright spot that has been leading the dark oval in the NNTrZ is also visible but the distance between them is stretching out noticeably. I suspect the position of the bright spot, being a little further North, is experiencing the stronger winds in the jetstream of this region. I also note a bright spot in the NEB, just leading the dark oval.
Have also attached animations of the R & RGB data which show the movement of the dark oval quite well. Have also attached polar projections of all data.
Thanks to all for your kind words. I didn't really have any expectations for what I would get this session. My drift chart for the dark oval had it well placed but of the 3 weather models I look at, two were predicting fair seeing while the other was predicting a worse case scenario. In the end I was glad to snag just a couple of data sets that resolved the dark oval.
Thanks Ray & Asi, FYI have attached a link that covers the subject of this dark oval very well and includes a hi-res Cassini image of it taken early this year.
