Saturn 8th April 2013

Hi all, here is an image of Saturn from this morning in reasonable seeing, quite a few light coloured features visible across the disk.

Here's a link to a luminance animation, please excuse the 0.5 pixel shift between the images in the animation, very annoying.

http://www.acquerra.com.au/astro/gal...9-1618-rgb.gif

I've been testing an ASI-120MM-C camera for the last couple of weeks, thanks to Sam from zwoptical and it does seem to be more sensitive than my Flea3 FL3-FW-03S1M and also lower noise - quite an achievement for a cmos-based camera. These images were taken with the ASI camera.

I've been using the same capture settings that I would on the flea3, and a 4x powermate instead of my normal 5x powermate (which works at 6x with the spacing). The change from 6x => 4x pretty much cancels out the pixel size difference between my Flea3 and the ASI camera and allows an equal comparison.

I also like the t-thread on the top of the ASI camera, it means I can screw it directly onto one of my favourite 2" non-tilt adapters and it fits very nicely into my imaging setup. I can change the spacing if need be with standard t-thread spacers.

The only issue at the moment - for me at any rate - is that I have to use firecapture instead of my normal Linux capture software, meaning I lose access to some things that I need (eg 2x2 binning and integration with my wheel). But Sam has promised me some programming info so I can write a Linux capture program... hopefully not too far away...

regards, Bird

Nicely done there Bird, I knew deep down there was a Windows man lurking within. Look at all the fun you have been missing out on.

Cheers

its great to see you give this camera a bit of a rap and seeing the results you have achieved speak volumes. I bought one of these cameras to use for imaging and have been impressed with it as a guide camera - as sensitive as the loadstar.

Thanks all. Houghy, I've tested a few cmos cameras over the last few years and they've all been much worse than my ccd camera - until this one. I guess the cmos technology has pretty much caught up now.

cheers, Bird

I'm interested in finding out how the colour version of this camera goes. Any examples on the net to look at? As I can't seem to find any.
