Need a new PC to run astro-cameras

I have just over $1000 and need a computer to do the following.

(I already have purchased a full version of windows 7 pro edition 64bit)

I want to run several astro-cameras, plus processing software for stacking astrophotos. Using photoshop, deep sky stacker and Maxim DL5.

I have a wireless router so it would be good if it could pick up that signal too.

So I need a desktop PC with 8gb of RAM and a 64 bit system. A TB of storage should be enough on it.

I've been looking at Dell and HP

What do you PC guru's think? Where the best place I can order one online?

The best thing to do mate is to custom build your PC. You can choose whatever you like and you save a whole heap of money!

I have used them a number of times and found them to be quite good. You can customise a computer virtually exactly how you want it and as cheap or expensive as well.

The Proprietry computers from HP and Dell are very reliable but they are designed for the average user who wants to surf the internet, have email , Facebook, Twitter. Utube etc. They often don't take kindly to other uses.

They often have unusual construction that does not allow any modification (only a problem for geeks) and special versions of video displays with special drivers that can't be upgraded.

If you want a computer to control a number of specific ancilliary equipments, you really need a custom built computer. Where you can install an RS232, superdooper graphics display or other interface card if needed.

The general purpose laptops from ASUS, ACER etc. seem to have more conventional internals and the ones with intel chipsets, graphics rather than ATI seem to have more driver options. The range from Apple are very reliable and great for graphics but they too lack means of driving periferals effectively. However the are all now fitted with new operating systems that are sadly lacking in drivers for our astonomy gear.

Most operators in the field use one or two standard laptops with XP or Win 7 O/S and seem to be operationally self sufficient.

You say you have Windows 7 to install so that will be a distinct advantage in the short term. However remember to make your recovery discs for the new computer before you reformat the HDD and install Win 7.

By the way custom building is not that hard. I do it all the time and the computer shops have a great range of motherboards etc. that you can put together in a few hours to make a very good contoller of external periferals. $1000 will get you a very good computer.

I have a small HP Pavillion Notebook with 8GB RAM , AMD E-350 1.6GHz running Windows 7 home premium 64bit. I run all my astro capture programs PHD, Nebulosity as well as CCD Stack, MAXIM DL, PixInsight, Photoshop, CDC, Stellarium etc... Cost me around $550.00 couple of years ago including the OEM OS preloaded. If you still need a desktop I get my stuff from www.jw.com.au in Villawood. They also have a store in Campbeltown now I think and an online shop. You can even build your own system online and get a quote. They build it for you, test it and you pick it up. Easy peasy.

These guys have a list here that you can check out. Not sure if Centrecom are up in Canberra but this will give you an idea.

I use one of these

It has no monitor so I use an existing pc to operate it using VNC. Its small enough to place it on your pier or even on your mount so there's no need for a hub.
