Hair Rasing Lightning Strike

Hi guys, last night i ventured out again as a storm was brewing, I just cant keep away.

Anyway I set up and proceeded to start capturing in the direction of the storm, mind you here i am in an open field with a lightning storm closing in

An then it hit just after my third exposure, I heard a deafening snap and it let loose not more than 300 meters away, the hairs on my arms stood on end, and scared the crap out of me, but what a capture.

I was going for a second one but thought better of it, and retreated to a safe place while the rest of the storm passed.

But it was exciting though

Hope you like it.
Leon

WOW! Leon, that's really quite an amazing capture-well done. You should send that into BOM site,or weather channel, they would use something like that on a calendar. What settings did you use? and did you use a lightning trigger? I bought one for the summer, but its still in its box-never used, never had a lightning storm since I've had it!-this image reminds me I should put it in the classifieds.

Good luck with more images

Thank you to all, and in reply to the setting, no lightning trigger, it all works fine without I reckon, I use a Canon remote, set at 6 -8 second shots with an interval of 2 seconds for the download.

Camera settings are usually F/11.0 @200 ISO with a Canon 70-200 F/2.8 set at 70mm

Glad you enjoyed it.

Wow. Excellent capture
I would love to do this but we don't get much lightning in Tas and I miss it having grown up in NSW.

I had a strike hit about 100meters away, it was the loudest noise I've ever experienced. I was blinded for a about a minute afterwards cos it struck right in the centre of my visual field. I don't blame u for retreating to a safe haven :-)

What an awesome shot that is, congratulations Leon! Hope you get it published around, it really deserves it.

I had a similar experience as a kid. A fairly large thunderstorm was over our house and of course I was hanging half way out an open window on the top floor to have the best possible view... Then a strike happened a few hundred metres away. It made the loudest bang I think I've heard, and also blinded me for a while. I vividly remember feeling the heat in my face from the intense light. I did close the window after that!
