Keyhole Area

Good night last night. I was chasing ISON which I think I missed again... Will have to dig harder. Maybe it's in the moon glow washed out subs. I used a stack of Blue and Green filter to narrow the range around the 500nm band which is where the comets are most prominent. After I was done with ISON I turned to ETA which is right up ahead and did 5min subs. Because of the green/blue combination of filters mostly the keyhole area stuck out and it made for a pretty picture despite the moon and light pollution.

There's a big one here if you want to have a peek around. That's a 1:1 crop probably 70% of the whole area as the rest is fairly uninteresting. Little camera tilt showing in the stars but nothing dramatic. That was done with a 90mm APO.

I really liked Peter M.'s ETA framing so I tried to do something similar.

Enjoy the view and thanks for looking.

Looks good Marc; do I understand that you have stacked just blue and green images for this mono image of Eta? It still shows a lot of detail in the nebula despite the lack of red subs then!

I think it looks beautiful. Can you tell me how long the exposure were and what scope and mount were you using. I love the pinpoint stars in this image Marc and when I image i never really get the pinpoint stars. I get the same stars but they almost always seem a little fuller rather than pinpoint. I use a William Optics Flt110 on EQ6PRO with PHD guiding.

Thanks David. No, it's one green and one blue filter stacked together.

Thanks Mark. Hardly pinpoint more like flaring but I don't use that scope much and I need a bit more practice. It has pretty sharp optics but a very small corrected field. I just need to work out the focuser and extension tubes sag.

It's a 90mm Carbon Fiber triplet with a corrector and a QHY9 on a G11, guided through the 8x50 finder scope and a Q-guider. The subs were 18x5min.

To get tight stars you need impeccable guiding, good polar alignment, no wind, good seeing, spot on focus. That never happens. Only in the books so don't despair.

I think Marc has put both the green and the blue filters in the imaging train, thereby only letting through the light that passes both the filters.

Thanks Marc, im glad I inspired you to do something. It is an interesting image, I dont recall seeing people using multiple filters to image with.

Thanks mate. ... and get off IIS while honeymooning. You're going to end up in the dog house.

Ah OK, interesting approach to narrowband imaging! I didn't realise that you can do that (ie. stack multiple filters) physically with your camera.

Thanks Rick. Yeah the highres yields a fair amount of details. I had my tilt sorted out it would be even better.

Blue + Green will give you a much wider band on the overlap than let's say Oiii. I'm using it for comets imaging.

Very nice result, and interesting approach with the filter combination. You've captured a lot of crisp detail in the area, great work

Thanks mate. Seems to get a lot of LP out off the image too and it's wider than an Oiii. I'll try to do better Saturday, just LUM this time. Apparently it's going to be clear. Hope I didn't jinx myself saying that.

Thanks mate. The sad thing about my site now is that the sky is all pink and red naked eye even at 12:00am at the zenith. Truly buggered. Ha still works but that's going fast too. When I retire I'm out of here, due south.

Thanks Ross. I did 1x2min last night in Ha in a sucker hole despite favourable forecast. + a lot of waiting until 1:00am when I went to bed and woke up to blue skies so I don't know when it cleared. What a tease...
