LCD TV's

My trusty Sony 68cm 4:3 TV died the other day, so I thought it's probably time to "upgrade" to a new-fangled wide-screen TV.

After buying a Sanyo CRT wide screen TV that lasted literally three hours before it died (I have a lot of luck with TV's). I took it back and bought a Magnavox 81cm LCD TV.

After a week of squinting and adjusting brightness, contrast and colour - I honestly can't believe this is what passes for a TV. It's unwatchable. There's just no dynamic range.

This TV was ~$1300 and I know it's not top of the range, but do they all have such bad contrast? Anyone have any experience with LCD TV's? What's a good TV these days!

I'm starting to think that getting my old TV fixed would have been a better option.

Magnavox is at the very bottom of the heap. $1300 for an 81cm LCD is very cheap. Now you know why. Same money for a 50-60cm LCD would buy a decent unit.

I'm all for CRT for TV. It's cheap and works well in any light. Nothing that I'd watch on TV needs a hi-def display. I have a Sanyo Z3 projector for movies and it rocks. Since I started watching movies on the big screen with the Z3, no plasma or LCD screen is good enough. It does require a dark room though. Some of last year's Snake Valley campers would have seen it in action.

also a 90" wide screen roof mounted auto screen with acer projector
(drool when the footy's on)
in th workshop a 21" wide screen Samsung LCD TV ($1,000)

I got a TEAC 81cm LCD TV for $1700, its not too bad too watch. bang for bucks, it came with a 3 year warranty. Nice bright screen too.

Thanks guys. I think I'll take it back and get a refund. If it cost $500 and I had it hanging on the wall of the garage, it would be worth the price but for everyday use, it's atrocious.
I'll have a look around and see how much it costs to fix my old TV maybe. Anyone know any non-shonky TV repairers around Melbourne?

No, but you can probably get a new CRT TV for the cost of the repair.

That's the thought that crossed my mind. Which is why I started on this "upgrade" cycle.
