Canon1100D $328 -Harvey Norman

I was surprised to see the pricing on the Canon 1100D - Harvey Norman are advertising at $328. Sounds like a very good price to me.

Their online price is showing as $396 - maybe it has changed?

HN have the body only at $298...now that's a good buy if you don't want the lens...or possibly buy and sell the lens...of course fleaby has these lenses going cheap in anycase.

Citywide have the body only for $253 + $10 insured shipping....(HK located grey importer).

Eglobal (never heard of them), probably another grey importer located in HK have them for $239...probably extra for shipping as well.

Eglobal's shipping/insurance seems a bit pricey, but sometimes their prices are better by enough of a margin to make up for it. From what I've seen, the prices vary quite a bit across the grey importers just like brick-and-mortar retailers.

Edit: Re-reading this, I thought an explanation might be helpful. I'm in the market for a DSLR and have bookmarked various models across several sites, checked roughly fortnightly, for the last 8 months. I've also read the warranties and shipping/insurance conditions for those sites. I still haven't decided what to buy, but have been interested in the price movements over the period.

Well from what I can see (over last 8 years) it is pretty much at the bottom of the market ATM, price wise, and DSLRs have never been better with better features, cheaper prices.

Canon 1100D stacks up very well to my older 450D (what I have) but I paid $850 years back. So you cannot go wrong with ~$300 for a crop sensor camera.

Maybe also look at the central DS cooled DSLRs if you want one for just astro use. Of course the argument that "these cost just as much as a QHY 8" is a valid one.

If you want full frame the new 6D appears to give good performance price wise and some of the Nikons are pretty good especially the newer ones, D5100, D7000. Also given there is a gent converting these to mono for a reasonable price...these could make a damn nice astro camera...mono DSLR, mmmm!

The only issue with the Nikons is that there is lass available software to tether & run them like these is with the Canons. That said there are a few android apps out for this nowadays.

I have a std 450D and a FULL full modded 1000D which perform very well for spectroscopy - they cost a LOT more than the 1100D offering at the moment.
IMHO you can't go wrong at that price - bang per buck you'll get a lot of astro-fun from it.

Oh I forgot Nikon DSLRs that have been converted to mono by Icodome will have future support for laptop tethering by Guylian, the gent who did BYEOS.

I believe he is working on a version for Nikon called BYNIK or BackyardNIK.

This would be very interesting.

I can now finally retire the old G5

Looks like the HN deals are done. The body only is back up to $328 and the Single Lens kit is no longer on their site.
