Witch Head, well some of it.

Hi,

Wanted to do two things with the Witch Head.

1. Try out the baader fringe killer, to remove the violet/ magneta from the ster halo's. It works, but does make the background on individual subs a little green.

2. Push my unmodded canon 1100D, I went for twelve minute exposures. As it turned out it was too long without cooling, it was a bugger to process out the noise and gradient. In future I'll stick to my usual 8 minute subs unitl I get the camera modded with cooling.

Anyway, worth a try and I'm reasonably happy with the result cosidering how noisy the image was.

Equipment.

Skywatcher ED80, orion field flattener, baader fringe killer, HEQ pro 5 mount.
Camera, Unmodded canon 1100D.
7 x 12 minute subs, darks, flats and bias frames applied.
Stacked in DSS, median stack, median noise removal.
Processed PS7.

Cheers,

Justin.

Nice image champ! I could never image this and maybe it has something to do with me living in Western Sydney.

You have done well with the Canon and its just the noise that needs to be addressed.

Here's a repro, brought out a little more in the nebula, thanks for the tips Dave, (Nakies) supplied in a PM. Don,t wish to push it any further though.

BTW I'm replying to this using one eye only, had a lump of rusty steel removed from my left eye and have an eye patch. So my depth perception is up the wattle.

Makes it interesting tapping away on the key board.
Bad enough wearing glasses without this!

Cheers,

Justin.

Nice job Justin. Never attempted this one myself as I think it would be a waste of time from my light polluted backyard.

Cheers

Steve

Your tip is starting to pay off, been playing around and I should be able to improve quite a few images.

That's a good image of a difficult object Justin! You mention that the longer subs increased the noise? Cooling will help a lot, but I would also try adding some more subs to reduce the noise - 7 subs is not a lot in terms of stacking / combining IMHO.

Thanks David!

Yes cooling will be good, had an orion cooler box but had to send it back. I have just purchased another Canon 1100D which is being sent off to be modded for cooling and filters.
This will help a lot, although summer will probably be over by the time the camera comes back.

Cheers,

Justin.
