Hmmm!!!. Yes Simon I have the DS9 one of those you pictured. Always wondered if it was Kosher, thats why I did'nt buy any more.

Edit:
Just done a bit of checking since unpacking some of my stuff and they appear genuine, Paramount logo and stamp on the case. Certainly don't have the look of bootleg ones, artwork finish is too good. Paramount are not known for putting up with piracy for very long, so I'd say they were genuine after all. Unless you've heard to the contrary.

Check the disks for Asian characters, for info see here: Linkypoo

Even some of the Voyager ones are dodgy.
From memory, the difference is the genuines have a transparent-coloured plastic box while the copies are non-translucent.
Saw photo's of the difference on Amazon somewhere, but now can't find it.
Found this one tho of the packaging I'm talking about. Current run of DVD's are repackaged so look very different.
If a seller claims they're region 4 they're probably okay.

Have to agree with you there Liz...Spock was played very well! Down Pat I'd have to say.

Looks like they are bootleg ones after all, no sign of asian characters etc, but they are tagged as region 1 and are actually region 0 (free).
My player was set up for anything short of vinyl , so it would'nt have been noticable when I bought them a couple of years back.

Cheers

Saw the new Star Trek movie tonight, it was OK, but not exceptional, other than in one area: characterisation. SFX weren't as good as I was expecting, and the story was very weak. Still, was good fun, and the new warping effect is pretty cool. I noticed a Star Wars line as well "punch it".

Dave

edit: I still rate it above all the other Star Trek movies, except for First Contact, which is still my favourite.

double edit: I wish that they'd honoured the original show by saying "to boldly go where no man has gone before" - that was the *spirit* of the original show, and to change that is an insult to Gene's original vision imho.

Jeez - what does it take, honestly?

I saw it for the second time last night and it was still a knockout. The sheer magnitude of the ships interior structure and crew complement, and detail such as the cooling turbine areas put it in a special class for me. None of the other ST movies have been this well produced - with this level of attention. True, the story could have developed more, and I'm sure that this criticism has been taken on board by Abrams for the next one. I can't wait.

In my opinion, the effects were lightyears ahead of any previous ST movie - and most others. What exactly were you expecting?

We saw the movie on Saturday night with some friends. My wife was reluctant to go and would have preferred "The Boat that Rocked" but she said that she enjoyed it, and surprisingly she did not nod off once during the whole thing. I usually have to tell her at the end if the movie was any good and how it ended

She has heard of Kirk and Spock, but had to ask about the "holding the fingers apart thing..." so she is obviously not a fan. So I guess this has to be a big from her.

My main criticism of the movie, and many movies today (even Kath & Kim do it) is....can't they afford a tripod to put the camera on? You don't have to shake the camera around to make you think that you are there....you obviously are not, and if you were, you brain and eyes would largely smooth out the movement. This filming without a tripod stuff is getting a bit ho humm to me now...time for them to lash out and buy a decent tripod for their cameras!

Yes Trevor - that's a J.J. Abrams signature technique. I think it was well used here, as it is designed to take you along for the run across the deck with the character to enhance the feel of adrenalin-rush action sequences. I don't think it was overly-used, and is better employed here than on something like Lost - but, each to their own I guess.

I also took someone that is unfamiliar with the last 40+ years of Star Trek and they consider themselves a convert now. Well.. until the next movie anyway! LOL

Saw it last night. Excellent movie. Loved it!

A little concerned over the black hole fantasy science, but we as astronomers are probably a small minority that would have a beef with it.

Would watch it again and buy it when it comes out on DVD.

Baz.

Chris - the SFX were good, but not outstanding. SFX is something I've followed for a good number of years. I'm not saying they were bad, I just expected more. Compare this movie to Revenge of the Sith and you'll know what I mean.

Barry - yes, the story was weak in many aspects. As I said to someone else, kids are leaving the sciences in droves, it's bad enough without 'bad science' adding to it. There's a reason why it's called science fiction - it has an element of science in it. And accurate science. Yes, I know it has the word fiction in it as well, which obviously allows some lateral movement in the accuracy of the science content, but I felt the movie went beyond it.

Still, it was a thoroughly enjoyable movie and I would go watch it again, and will be buying the DVD.

I saw Star Trek last night.

very mild spoilers (but nothing you won't work out in about 2 minutes)

good points:
- Spock (sylar from heroes)- Sylar does a good angry spock when the human side breaks through
- kirk, pretty good. cocky, adventurous. looked a bit like a young shatner
- eric bana's speceship and photon torpedoes look good
- checkov
- the first 20 minutes is quite good
- refreshingly, space IS silent

bad points:
- sometimes (often!) felt I was watching the star wars movies (something from all three of the original ones)
- weak premise
- time travel. I know, a staple of Star Trek but still...

mildly bad point:
- the (known) history of the Star Trek universe has been changed allowing for more movies in the franchise
- but nothing that cannot be changed in a later movie by more time travel (see bad points)

overall- 7/10 (heaps better than wolverine)

This was an very good movie

although I was not entirely happy with them changing TOS history

FX excellent, acting good, story line was a very typical revenge theme which has dominated many of the Star Trek movies

Could have been better

Rating 7/10

I'll be honest, I found the whole movie... illogical.
Great action; but lacking in ST moral and more focused at today's youth.

Now that I think about it, yes, I agree. But then, Abrams is reknowned as an action director, and it was this sort of movie that was going to capture interest from viewers I suspect. Hollywood will always repackage ideas to make the $$$. One of the things I liked about "I am legend" is that it stuck to most of the original story, more so than the Omega man did. True, it wasn't 100% faithful to the book, but it was a good attempt. And it's not one of those BS hollywood 'feel happy' endings too. Life isn't a fairytale, and movies shouldn't always have fairytale endings imho.

The guy that played Spock was perfect for the role. Brilliant casting there.

Great movie, superb cinemaphotography with interesting and very different camera shots and action scenes. Lots of light and brightness in the scenes rather than the cheaper to make dark dim shots that plague some movies when they are on a budget.

I agree effects were on a new level and acting was good as well. A bit of humour without the corny one-liners many US movies specialise in.

Also some interesting sets in how they set out the ship and parts looked very industrial which is very believable on a large ship but the computer
consoles and displays had more of a believable future look to them. Also some nice retro controls that looked like engine controls off a large ship. So nice mix of future, retro and industrial. I also thought it was smart to show the shuttles hills as looking very worn like they are used a lot and roughly - again very realistic.

The best Trek movie so far and better than Generations which I thought was the best before this one.

Greg.

Saw it last Sunday night with family & friends. Everyone loved it. The characters were spot on from looks to behavior. The storyline changed quite a bit from the original Star Trek pilot, but I actually preferred the new outcome.
As some others have stated, I like the different angles used in the cinematography. It really added to the realism of space.
I've been a Star Trek fan all my life (I mean fan, not fanatic. I don't go to conventions in full Kligon regalia) but there are a couple of things that I have always found annoying in the Star Trek universe. I hate it when the Enterprise & another starship face off to each other and they are only 500 meters apart. Surely if we can travel 300 light years in 6 hours and teleport people at the same time, we can develop offensive and defensive tactics that are effective from more than one kilometer. The other thing is that in these interstellar encounters, the two or more starships are always on the same plane. By this I mean they are all the same way up. Almost as if in space there is an up and a down. I would love to see a scene where two ships meet and one is at a totally different attitude to the other. This latest movie touched on this a bit when it showed the Enterprise at an unusual angle to a planet.
Anyway, loved the movie and will probably buy the DVD when it's available
