A tip PCH... stay away from anything on ebay listed as "Region Free" or advertised as being in both "NTSC and PAL formats", or "Chosen Collection"...... they're copies, and from what I've read... poor.
Anything region 4 is almost guaranteed to be genuine.

Saw the movie last night. Pretty good. I'm not a huge trekker movie buff, but I did like the series (especially Next Generation). I wouldn't rave about it, but certainly enjoyable and worth going to see on the big screen.

I bought my copies from the Life Line Book Fest.
They're all on video, and cost 33 cents per video, 2 - 3 episodes per vid.
They also had the complete collection of all the other series, next generation etc, but it was hundreds of videos, don't have room to store them. Pity.

Fleabay has long been doing that...

But the movie industry has itself to blame. DVD region coding should be made illegal imho, it is not in the best interest of the public. As an example, I'm trying to get a copy of Hellsing: Ultimate...it's only available in region 1 & 2...the distributor/manufacturer doesn't care. No wonder piracy is on the rise...

I am part of a group that that gets Blu-Rays from Amazon with good results in Region A...which is really region free...These are not copies, they are released in the states like that. Either way...this is one area I am not hung up on...I'll take what I can get...as long as the picture is Pure HD with preferably HDMA audio on a 50GB BD...with lesser sound only if released in the original master copy. Each to their own I guess...I can think of a few other formats that would suffice, but hey why stir up a hornets nest.

I think you'll find anyone selling pirated copies on Ebay doesn't last long, they get booted off pretty quick. I usually stick to long term sellers, not much chance of getting a bootleg one that way.

I think there was a ruling a few years back about DVD Players being region free in Aus, but only a recommendation I think, not mandatory. It was ruled as an unfair practice to have locked to Region 4, so its not illegal to change it in Aus.
There are ways of changing the region code of your player to Region 0 (Region Free), it involves getting into the service side of the firmware, normally hidden from Joe Public, usually just by punching in a code on the remote. Have a look on Google. It does not overide the copy protection on the disk, so you are not breaking any laws in that area either.

Not much chance of getting that Region Coding on the actual disks removed though, far to lucrative a lurk for the producers.

Just came back from the movies.
Wowee!!
Excellent. 8.5 out of 10.
The buddy I went with gave it 7.5, he deducted points because the womens uniforms weren't true to the original series.
All my concerns were unfounded. They must have had some hard core fans helping with the script.
Looking forward to the next installment.

LOL...I thought the uniforms were pretty close myself. I gave extra points alone for that.

Haven't seen much of the original series (grew up in country NSW) but, was an avid Next Generation viewer.

Really enjoyed the new movie. Where else to go with the Star Trek franchise except back to the beginning.

Even my none Trekie wife enjoyed it (Had much pleasure pointing out what tele show each actor had been in....?)

Great Trekie plot and twists even if it did over do the Star Trek bit in the end..........

All thumbs up.... Normally I'd wait for something I want to see to come out on DVD but, this is well worth experiencing on the big screen.

Refreshing effort and can't wait for the next episode....

Cheers
Deeno

Saw it yesterday. Jam-packed with action and sound to match. Loved the way they gradually blended in all the original characters from the series. Took me a little while to realise Eric Bana was the villain.

Thanks for the recommendation guys.

Regards, Rob.

Spocks Mother !!!!!

My mate didn't recognise her either, strangely enough I recognised her immediately, though I did think she looked a little older than anything else I've seen her in. This is in fact the truth, as this IS a brand new movie after all!

I could tell Winona anywhere by her eyes......

Yes, she looks older, but makeup technology is pretty good at imparting that.

Yessireee, two thumbs up from me!
Loved it.

As I mentioned in post #21, took my mum to see this, she enjoyed it too.
In our post-mortem mum said she was trying to work out where she had seen Nero's face before... all through the movie, then she clicked when the credits rolled...haha.
Both of us were trying to work out who Winona Ryders character was, mum first suggested Nero's wife, I said neh, then she suggested Spocks mum... ahhh ofcourse!... those black eyes!
A bit of a subdued surprise went around the cinema when Simon Pegg appeared too
Zachary Quinto's Spock.... Brilliant, Kirk & Bones...brilliant.. Sulu, Chekov, Ahura and Sarek.... meh.

Sorry, I was aiming at DVD's with my comments... have no experience with BD.
Region free DVD's are not genuine, atleast not with Star Trek.
Only Star Trek Original is available on BD... because it's the only one that can be show in HD... all the following series were shot on video, not film.
If they do get released on BD, they'll be no better than DVD quality.

Dunno about that, have seen a few sellers with 20k+ sales to their name selling pirated dvd's. Particularly these ones:

Well, blow me down ... hadnt realised Winona was even in it!!
I had seen quite a bit of publicity on it, and was all centred on Eric Bana, and the other main characters.
Spock character by Zachary quinto was excellent.
