Cheers Kev.
It's a one time fee for personal plates if they have a standard NSW layout
- 2 letters + 3/4 numbers,
- 3 letters + 3 numbers,
- 3 letters + 2 numbers + 1 letter,
- 2 letters + 2 numbers + 2 letters.

The family have 3 sets of 2l+3/4n and 2 sets of 3l+2n+1l. Mum also has an all numeric.

Anything else has an annual fee.

its all relative, in Australia, despite the cost of buying a car, which is ridiculously expensive, the cost of keeping a car on the road is quite cheap.

Fuel, Rego and insurance are all way higher than over here, although buying a motor is way cheaper.

not that relevant i know, soz!

I was doing some numbers on the cost of running our car.

I always kept a spreadsheet on the car and the bike and all costs such petrol, services, rego and insurance as well as any accessories are included.

For the 2005 Holden Crewman, running costs are currently $0.36 per kilometre.

By comparison the 1985 BMW K75c motorbike running costs are $0.10 per kilometre.

It all gets a bit scary when you look at it in that type of light.

I don't have any problem with rego. Two cars a trailer and a caravan.
Total rego cost per year $303
Insurance is the big cost $873 for one car (includes 3rd party)
and $1107 for the other (includes 3rd party)

If cost are too high for you bite the ego bullet and get a smaller car.

Motoring is still only around 35c per KM for me for 20000Km /year about 12% of my yearly budget.
It was 19c per KM for 20000km/year 25 years ago when it was 20% of the budget.

Personalised Plates = Voluntary Taxation

Just my two cents worth, which in this era of rounding equals stuff all...

I have three vehicles and don't have a problem paying a registration on each of them but to have to pay a compulsory third party component on each ($1061.00 total) is a sore point, particulaly when I can only drive one of them at a time. A fairer system might be a CTPC calculated on the heaviest vehicle and paid as a single fee. Incidentally the CTPC on my motorcycle is $120.00 (this figure includes a $50.00 plus tax motorcycle safety levy) more than it is for my ute, and about $70.00 more than the fee on the MX5.

Greg.

P.S. The motorcycle safety levy is spent improving some of our roads "Black Spots" for the safety of all road users, and it is seen as an unjust tax by many motorcyclists.
