Ah the decisions of youth! I remember people saying "if you have long hair you will get nits" (they actually prefer short hair). "Why should we have to wear a uniform, teachers don't" (that was a really dumb one).

When I was at school I had the old "short back and sides" at the time (60's and 70's). I guess if you can have what you want when you are young, there is nothing to aspire to when you get older, leave school, get a job...a mortgage...etc.

My hair at the moment is the longest it has ever been (over the collar) and still growing (after 12 months, such hard work). I have been asked by a number of people why I am growing it, and I usually say to them "because I can" (not so much to do with "allowed" as having something to grow). Being a programmer, I think you need to grow a pony tail at some time in your life! I guess I had three alternatives: the blonde bimbo (my wife wouldn't appreciate that), the red sports car (my wife would insist on driving it) or long hair (she the one that suggested it) so being an idependent person, I did the one that would cost the least

As regards your hair, you could fight if you want, but you probably won't win..."compromise is the art of good business" (heard this recently from a guy with shocking hair ) so maybe try compromise...I think they would go more psycho if you shaved it all off, but don't forget the sun block

It was mentioned before - thank your lucky stars your parents have the good sense to send you to a private school rather than a public school run by our (hopelessly inept) incumbent state government. Apart from the unavoidable bent on religion you'll be put through, whether you choose to believe in it or not, your education there should put you in reasonable stead for what's ahead of you.

I went to a public school back in the 70's and it was arguably the best in the state - North Sydney Boys High School. It was a selective school and you had to prove yourself to gain entry. I drive past the school these days and all I see are run-down buildings and louts hanging around with their shirts out, jeans instead of trousers and attitudes to match. A real shame and a blight on current politics. If I'd "argued" with my teachers over anything I would have been suspended if not expelled. You guys have it WAY too easy nowadays. LOL! You shouldn't have the right to arue with anyone yet - learn, gain experience and life knowledge and maybe then you could argue a point without sounding like you know it all (which I hear all kids do these days).

Good luck with the band, and don't let all the negative comment here get you down too much - it's called the "generation gap" - and we, too, suffered it as kids. (All better now as we can do the same to you! )

Germaine Greer in the Female Eunuch pointed out that the youth who claims that his hair length is irrelevent is being deliberately disingenuous. You want long hair for some reason, and that reason is at least partly because of the impact it has on others. To say otherwise is a lie. Your school agrees that your hair length impacts on others, and they have an opinion about what impact their students should be able to have on others. Frankly, I don't care, but make it your business to be honest with yourself, and get intelligent. Sure, schools are a fascist regime, but they are also a good place to acquire wisdom and intelligence. Your choice.

There most likely will come a day when you would dearly love to have enough hair to get it cut!!!

Don't sweat it.

Find a good hairdresser...get the chop....have a laugh parading your new 'do' around....think about the bigger picture.

They can 'order' you to cut your hair, but they can't change who you are.

Attitude is about so much more than your hair!!

I can’t add much other than to write I have really enjoyed the many and varied replies so far – what a fascinating community we are; an incredible melting pot of people with views, experiences and advice that whilst diverse, are none the less quite warming and certainly illuminating.

Thanks!

I think I would rather be assumed to be a bum or shoplifter...than give the shallow stereotypers of this world the satisfaction of thinking they actually knew me

If you want I'll cut it for you for free. I've never cut hair before but hey I'm always interested in the personal development of our youth.

Smile, at least your olds want to send you to a good school.
Sound advice Monte.

It's all about the education of turning a youth into an adult and preparing them for entry into the real working world. Countless times I employ youths in the 18 to 22 yr old age bracket who are great at maths and science yet have the common sense of a lizard, because they dont teach those things at school.

[quote]Since when did short hair make you get a better education.[quote]

Ric,

Getting an education is more than just maths and science. Discipline is a learned skill not an inbred one. It's good that the school still tries to instill some discipline into the kids. The public school system sadly lacks this.

Caleb,

If you go to the school I think you do, which is where my son goes, Central Coast Grammar, it's costing your old man about $15+ large a year after tax. You should be very grateful that he wants to give you the best start to life he can instead of worrying about playing with your organ or whatever you play, which necessitates long hair. You could leave school and play music thus saving your old man a packet. Be very thankfull you have what you have. 95% of kids your age would give their left arm to have what you have, yet you are dissillusioned and resentfull?

GROW UP maybe ? Sorry son no sympathy here, you don't realise how lucky you are.

Cheers,
John B

I rememebr having the humiliation of a bowl cut, as that was the only long haircut i was allowed to have at one stage, very strict parents, i'm glad i have short hair in this heat tho! and i dont miss split ends - couldnt do anything with it!

Caleb, Learning to think clearly and freely for yourself is all that counts. You will eventually overcome the adversity of having to attend a private school...

You might enjoy a few appropriate epithets from Oscar Wilde:

"Education is a wonderful thing, provided you always remember that nothing worth knowing can ever be taught.

The old believe everything; the middle-aged suspect everything; the young know everything." hehe

It's all to do with disclipline, me old china, you go to that school, they have rules, you have to obey them. Otherwise tell your parents to send you to a state school, and save their money for a telescope for you.
Long hair gets into your eyes, contains bugs, looks scruffy, makes your hat not fit any more. Do the right thing, look smart. As long as you dont go the other way and have it all cut off. Young bald men look awful - are they all on chemo??

Don’t forget…you are not your hair; cutting your hair does not cut, nor reduce you.

Discipline and order are good; we would be in a pickle if the Sun, being lazy one day, decided not to “rise”, or our heart decided not to beat. Rules and clockwork habits can sometimes appear petty, but they bring stability and certainty.

Breaking free is also good; limits are there to be challenged, but challenged with wisdom, as even angels’ fear to tread where fools blindly rush in. Rules can sometimes stifle and smother – so breaking out brings new insights and liberation from stagnation.

But, the more we look at a small part of our larger self, the greater it becomes; thinking about your hair too much and with a disproportionate amount of energy, magnifies the problem, perhaps making it an ogre, thus diminishing you; making you less than who you are. Your hair is but a small part of you, not the whole shebang. Focus on what you have and all of who you are, not what you look like or the local fashions that are tissue thin and forever change.

When you were born you didn’t have hair; at 60 you may also not have it. Yet there is still you – that is what is more important and worthy of a greater investment in yourself.

By the way, isn’t this stuff we also call hair actually “dead”?

Cheers

Dennis

Being a pilot and later an airline pilot requires discipline and obedience to set rules and regulations. Failure to comply results in the death of yourself and your passengers. If you cannot accept discipline and rules at this stage of your life how do you expect to cope with them later on in life.
My advice , if aviation is want you really want as a career, is forget about all the long hair and trendy music. Concentrate on science and mathematics.
Above all keep visualising yourself as a successful airline captain, work hard at your studies and those dreams will come to fruition.

LOL, Ive done the long hair at school, played Metal (still do, a bit), et al. Wanna do Metal full time?, keep the hair, wanna real job?, lose it. Life aint "fair", go with the Man or fight him, and sacrifice pride or money. I tell you one thing for sure, dont do the hair thing for too long, its that simple, theres nothing sadder than a wannabe 40+ yr old rock star (and all that goes with it) with long hair that "nearly" made it, ive met sooo many losers like this in my time.

..well, everything from philosophy to felatio.. opined from ivory towers and nod'n'winked from fellow travellers with their feet on the ground.

every 2 or 3 yrs I shave my head.. but not my beard.. and each time there's less to be shorn ..'specially on top.. so now it doesn't get to "metal" lengths anymore, but still enuff to provoke "ya hippie" jeers from young and old alike.. you know the ones.. gettin' a good tan on their anally-inserted heads... own the world and God-appointed arbiters of everything.. One can see why technology has failed to liberate us from war and famine, stupidity and arrogance... mindset.. hursuit or glossy.. "It's ALL in the MIND y'knoww"!!
