Interestingly, the 'Ashes' originally came from Australia, back in 1882. A group of ladies presented the small ceramic urn (possibly an empty prefume jar) containing the burnt remains of a bail (95% sure) to Hon Ivo Bligh, later Lord Darnley.
The urn travelled to England with Darley, and at his death was bequeathed to the MCC Museum.
So, in actual fact, the urn is a museum piece, not a trophy at all.

The winners should keep it, no doubt about it. England got their arses kicked why should they be rewarded for it The MCC should stop being so pompus and recognize that the winners should hold the trophy. Common sense.
When Warney dies burn him and put him in a big urn and let the teams play for that. The aussies will love to win it and the poms for the first time will be able to handle Warney without too muck difficulty (Tufnell excluded)
