Sorry - more questions! Maxim DL Vs PHD (or something else entirely) - if using the lodestar autoguider, an OAG, and on Celestron 1100 EdgeHD scope. Also, am I likely to need an extra counterweight - my setup seems to be back heavy already, let alone when I add these extra bits and my DSLR sits even further back...

PHD is fantastic and it is free ! Maxim is an image capturing software so it will do quite a lot more than PHD and is quite expensive. if you are looking for guiding software, PHD does the job

I use PHD2 guiding (free) with Sequence Generator Pro (free or paid version. I bought the paid version after the trial). Maxim is great, but expensive.

Also check out BackyardEOS for canon dslr's and PHD combo. There is a Nikon version too.

Most software packages have a free trial period, so you can see which suits your needs.
Cheers, Aaron

Check out AstroArt6...it does all the pre and post processing as well as providing a very capable guider system.

I use a C11 with a few (!) Kg hanging of the end - a 1.3Kg spectroscope, the lodestar guider, the ATik314L imager and lots of cables!!
No issue, no drama.
