My QHY5 has a shutter and can take darks too. It's called a lens cap.

Does not work in CCDsoft though. You'd have to use Maxim and not sure what other software does a library dark subtract on the autoguider. CCDSoft does not.

I tried so many different cameras with my OAG, and ended up with the lodestar and it has never once failed to give me a star. Just works every single time and took all the hassles away. It is tiny and weighs almost nothing and is a dream to use.
The new QHY5 II is apparently also very good, but I haven't tried it.

Auto Guiders: Which is best and why?
Thanks a mil guys for wading into this pool of AG's. It seems from what I've read both here and on other forums, the Lodestar seems to get the most accolades but the brand I haven't seen mentioned is the Moravian G1-0300 imager and guider.Has anyone ever used one?

Czech made items are usually top-notch, and I have SEEN some good results wit Moravian stuff. Steve Massey sells Moravian CCD items here in Aus.

Meopta made some of the finest rifle scopes around (still considered up there). Not Zeiss, but not bad either.

I used to have one back in the hypered Techpan days-was very happy with it.

My vote is for the Moravian G1-0300. Tried the SSAG and it was Ok but the Moravian programme SIPS is dead simple to use - calibrates in less then a minute and guides sweet as. Got the choice of single star or a triangular solution is available also. Just got to make sure that balance is as near perfect as possible and its sub pixel all the way.

OK, so we have a number of AG users here which have all showed their owners that what they have is doing the job, but which one can calibrate on its own?.
I don't want to use a PC or laptop to guide. I want a top-notch stand alone AG.
My mounts are NEQ6, Paramount GT1100, Losmandy Titan 50 and a homemade 500kg payload GEM with ST-4 guider input.
G/scope are 4" F15, 5" F8, 4" F10 and 60mm F5.

If that's what you REALLY want....then advertise for a second hand SBIG ST4 guider - the original and the best.....
I've gone through three of them so far - keep them for years and then sell them - regret the sale - and buy another!!
They just seem to keep going, and going, and....
Having said that.....usually nowadays you have to have a computer involved to drive and download the imaging camera (why else would you want to auto guide?) that being the case you already have the PC just add another cable and you're guiding......

Indeed Laurie....but I must admit, while I was very happy with my Model-T, my (now also vintage) Fezza is a *just a bit* quicker...and it's red too!

I have used everything from my eyeball up to my Lodestar now. At the time all did the job, guide.
My first autoguider was a Toucam. Then I used a GStar-EX after trying many duds.
My current system uses a Lodestar and it guides the PMX at about 1 second of arc and mostly less rms. MaximDL is deluded!
The sensitivity and dynamic range of the LodeStar leaves everything else far behind if you bin x2.
I do not even have to monitor what the mount and guiding is doing. It just does it!
