The fact that some nutters usage of them has resulted in pretty much blanket bans seems illogical to me, when death by motor vehicle, tobacco, alcohol etc still wipes out more people than guns ever did.
I guess its like anything. If there is no real revenue loss to the Govt, they will ban things, but not if it involves loss of money.
That said, I fully agree assault rifles etc should be banned.

I Shoot Indian Mynahs, but the problem is they learn very fast, and will fly off even if you pointed a stick at them. I now hide in the bushes and take them out, since i started my culling 4 years ago the population of Rosella's has tripled, its gone from seeing 3 or 4 Rosella's a week to seeing 10-15 a day! and its wonderful!
I completely agree full automatic military weapons should be banned, but i think banning semi automatics was a bit of an over kill. A semi auto would be a great help on my property for controlling rabbits, foxes and other feral's.
I cant imagine why any civilian would need a full automatic military rifle like the AR15??

I am a firearm collector. Had that discussion here previously.
I must say I distance myself extensively from the American "gun nuts", because, put simply, they are odd. They believe it is their God-given right (because, apparently, the constitution and the NRA are GOD).
I participated on American collector websites (including being a forum moderator, and still am on one - CALM, SERIOUS collector site) for 15 years. You quickly learn a LOT about the American psyche that does not gel with most of civilisation. In the end, it repulsed me. SIGNIFICANTLY. A true example of megalomania society that thinks it dominates the world, and all must follow suit or else.
That is NOT an American bash, as I have a LOT of true American friends, but...
America is slowly learning reality, after decades of propaganda and supremacy dogma. As much as I dislike Obama, I find it fascinating what he and the Democrats are doing to America, and actually succeeding bit by bit. In essence, bringing the USA down a peg back to reality and opening their eyes to the truth of the world around them.
America needs controls on not just firearms but in a LOT of other areas.

The AR15 is NOT a fully automatic rifle in spite of Obama's rhetoric to the contrary.
The AR designation stands for ArmaLite Rifle. The main stream media have leapt on to the band wagon suggesting it is an Assault Rifle... but this is a distortion of semantics.
Incidentally, the gun control lobbyist harp on about adopting UK style gun laws in response to the Sandy Hook shooting without even realising that the AR15 is one of the rifles NOT banned in the UK.

The UK gun laws are an interesting topic in themselves.
Since their introduction, gun crime has increased 50%.

Many gun nuts stand 5-ft tall, have big beer bellies, big mustaches and loud bar room voices. Take away their guns and you take away what little self-esteem they possess.

I find it strange, (not) that when ever there is a mass shooting in the USA, we plebs downunder, get it splashed across our TV/ screens ad nauseam.
When at the same time in some other far of place in the world, the exact same is happening, and our MEDIA plebs, say zip.
I think US gun culture is a bit over the top, but history shows what happens when you disarm the masses.

Sorry, but for the harm these things do, and the number of people who still die or have their lives destroyed each year, the current controls are a joke, "relative" to the gun controls brought in.
How many drunk drivers get "let" back on the roads?????
( vs just ignore their conviction requirements )
Ie why not force people to also have drinking and smoking licenses,
and you lose em if found guilty of any offences
If you get a licence, you immediately renounce your right to free hospital care for any harm caused by your habit??
It would be fun to see that enforced.
All too hard, and too much money gets lost.
Blanket bans on anything simply makes policing simpler as you are always guilty, just by the act of possession ( like laser pointers )

( off to make some homebrew and watch the Mynahs laughing at me )

I hope you understand I was just pissing in your pocket with my greenies crack, I saw your post and couldn't help myself. A bit of dark humour seems to fly over the top of so many heads on this forum. I love trees and Koala bears and big stinky whales and Tasmanian devils and all the birdies in the sky and fungus on the trees, even gun wielding brainless American rednecks . Their gun laws suck, no politicians are willing to commit political suicide by changing them and the slaughter of innocent children and adults continues unabated. Tend to agree with Marc (multiweb), 5 months to go then probably 10 years before they get another look in such is the cost of reform .

Sorry , but I am 6 feet tall , slim and fit and are exactly the same with or without one of my shooters .
But USA's gun laws are very different than ours . .
In some ways they are better , and in others
Its the way of the world , even the tree huggers must realise this ? its called 'freedom' man .

Part two of that special is now available.
Not as side-splittingly funny as the first, but, worth a watch.

Your supposed right to sit in your room and lovingly fondle guns versus the continuing massacre of tiny innocents in schools. Tough call.

Its amazing how facts can be distorted to make a good story and paint someone in a good light when only half truths are told
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-01-1...n-1996/4463150
The yank is an idiot but Howard was no saviour the Liberals reaction was a knee jerk response to the Port Arthur massacre and only made it harder for law abiding citizens to obtain semi automatic firearms.

Gun laws are only obeyed by law-abiding citizens anyway. We seem to have more and more shootings around the Sydney area.
