Astronomical objects with 10" dobsonian

Hi, I was wondering, what are some good astronomical objects worth viewing with a 10" dobsonian telescope?

Here's a few for this time of year:

• The Ink Spot & NGC 6520 in Sagitarius
• Centaurus A, galaxy in Centaurus
• Omega Centauri, GC " "
• M83, gal. in Hydra
• M20 (Trifid Neb) & M8 (Lagoon Neb) in Sagitarius
• M22, GC " "
• M4, GC in Scorpius
• Eta Carina Neb in Carina
• M65/M66/MGC 3628, Leo Triplet of galaxies
• M104, Sombrero galaxy in Virgo

These should keep you going for a little while.

Most of these, if not all, should be visible from urban areas, but all are best seen from a dark site.

Then in Carina, Centaurus and Crux are
eta Carina
NGC 3532
the Jewel Box
NGC 4945

And later on include

Markarian's Chain in Coma Berenices!!!
It's all these galaxies running down in a line and when you come across "The Eyes" along the chain, you'll go "phoaaaaarw... freeeeeeaky!" It's my favourite patch of sky , can you tell?!

Go the Ink Spot as Mental suggested- that thing is weird!!!

Here's another couple of treats for you to look at ....

-Ruby Crucis: A carbon star which appears as a blood red dot! Easy peasy to find. Use high mag- 10mm eyepiece will do it nicely, pop the scope on the very bright star beta crucis (the bottom star on left side of the Southern Cross). Now within the same field of view that you see beta, look just to the left of it (it sits very close).

-R Corona Australis Region: NGC 6727, NGC 6723. If you have a widefield 10mm eyepiece, they will both appear on the opposite edges of the field of view- it looks amazing! One is a globular cluster and the other is stars surrounded with nebulosity. It looks so beautiful!

There's a lot of fun to be had in this area. The Needle Galaxy (NGC 4565) & the Black Eye galaxy are there too. I have no luck getting those in my 10" dob tho as my northern view looks over the city lights and those galaxies sit fairly low on the horizon from Brisbane.

There really is a ton of objects within reach of a 10"- you won't be getting bored in a hurry.

I observe amongst light pollution with my 10" dob so as a general rule, when I go looking for galaxies to view, I keep under magnitude 10. I find mag. 8 very do-able.

As others have said, the Leo Triplet group of galaxies is great viewing too.

See my article here for some easy to find showpiece objects in the sky at the moment. Some have already been mentioned here.
You simply must see "The Ghost of Jupiter" planetary nebula on that list!!! Use your 10mm eyepiece. It's blue (or green depending on your eyes). PN's are stars like our sun which have ended their life, so we are seeing all these gases that have been blown from the star (tho much gentler than a supernova & on its way to becoming a white dwarf).

Have fun- isn't astronomy awesome???!
