Adelaide people: Advice sort
I have been offered a job which probably requires the family to move from Port Noarlunga. We are thinking perhaps the north eastern suburbs around Klemzig, Paradise, Dermacourt region. Anyone live around there? Any advice? I will probably catch the O-barn into town.
So, to the most important question, what is the sky like at night? I don't expect it to be as dark as what it is down south but hopefully OK to do some imaging.

I live north of the city and LP is bad. You would need an LP filter or image in narrow band. Every time I shoot my images fog up with a pretty pink.... my guess is it would be worse in those closer suburbs. Just don't see the milkyway like we used to :-(

I thought you would reply Andrew. I already have a LPS filter which I anticipate will be of more use to me closer to the city. Most of the objects I have imaged at Port Noarlunga have been in the northern half of the sky so I was interested to know how much LP would be in the suburbs further north e.g. TTG way. I can see the Milky Way/LMC/SMC down at Port Noarlunga so it will be a bit disappointing moving but I have to be closer to town (well, Western suburbs) for work.

Move to the hills mate
I reckon the LP would be pretty bad in the city these days. I live in the Adelaide Hills and the sky is pretty dark here, even though I live in a small town. But we've just bought a property 10 minutes further east. Blackest sky I've seen for a long time.
Hey, my house is for sale if you want to move to the hills. Public transport to the city, schools, close to shopping, etc. and it's just a lovely spot.

Regarding the smc, lmc and milkyway visibility. From my home I can see them on a good clear night. But not clearly. I do have to use some sort of adverted imagination to see them stand out. The LP filter will help a great deal (actually looking to get one myself soon). I guess that's why I tend to travel to my darker site out at Sanderston to do any sort of serious viewing. Looking towards the north is a bit darker than south from here, but we still get affected by the lights of Golden grove to the east and Elizabeth to the north... sigh.... I think if your into video astronomy, it wouldn't be too bad...

I think another option will be anywhere along the Outer Harbor train line e.g. Semaphore, Glanville, Largs, Taperoo, Osborne etc. Going by the light pollution map, this is an OK spot. Will be quicker to get to work from here compared to NE suburbs.

I grew up not a million miles from Woodville, I remember playing footy against them.
Any reason why you haven't considered the western suburbs?
It served me well I hope and there are plenty of nice areas, of course I am not up to date on the current market prices.

Woodville, as in the SANFL?
I used to live in the Woodville area years ago. Yep, some nice places so I will have look. I also lived near Marion but the LP was terrible. We have to get our priorities right . I guess somewhere closer towards the coast will be better for imaging, at least when looking west. This is a long term job so we will probably live in the same spot for a number of years.

I was going to say areas like North Haven or north of Semaphore & Exeter could probably be not too bad. The area nearer to Victoria road might be worth a look because there's nothing much on the river side, so it might be reasonably dark. Bit close to magpies territory tho...
I thing south of the Port River / West Lakes area is probably a bit to populated these days.
When I was a kid we lived in Renown Park. We used to camp out in the back yard & I remember it was pitch black and you could see stuff like the SMC, LMC, M42, & the milky way as clear as anything. Not these days.
Good luck with it.

G'day Dan
I too live in the South (Seaford Rise) and I work in the North (near Elizabeth).
I commute to work everyday, it is a round trip of 176km everyday. Been doing it for the last 5 years and I can say it is a pain!
In relation to dark skies nearer the city. I met a bloke who lives at Henley Beach (in a well populated area), with a small strip of sky to image and I must say that his images were some of the best I have seen. So it is possible to get very good results. However, would be a pain for a visual astronomer!
Stay South Mate!
Best of luck.

Ahh, no unfortunately. It was Woody high school, I'm a Bay's lad myself but I am old enough to remember going to Woody oval to watch the footy as a kid.
I grew up around Richmond, Cowandilla, Brooklyn Park area.
I would of recommended somewhere from Lockleys to Henly Beach, as you say closer to the coast may be better but only because I know the area or at least did and it wasn't awful.

I went to Woodville High, and played a little bit of school football there. Gee, that was a long time ago.

Oh dear! Certainly not a drive i want to do. Plus, I have to be within 30mins of work when I'm on-call.
Yeah, I think I won't have as big a problem for imaging as I have a LPS filter. More of a problem for visual.
Maybe this will help me decide
